4:30pm

We've just had word from USE/Exposure Lights's Rory Hitchens that Ian Leitch (Independent Fabrications/brightonbigdog.com/Exposure Lights) is on the return leg of an attempt on the South Downs Double record, currently held by Mike Cotty (Cannondale).

Ian set out from Winchester at 3.03am this morning with an ambitious schedule, and blasted his way to the 100mile turning point at Eastbourne in an amazing 8hrs and 7mins. This in itself is the second-fastest known one-way ride, but Ian has his sights firmly set on Winchester and expects to arrive well before pub closing time tonight. It'll be tough going, though - there's a pretty stiff breeze from the west.

As is traditional with SDD attempts, Ian's riding the trail non-assisted, carrying all his food and equipment with only the official SDW water taps to his aid. We will have word from Winchester later and bring you Ian's finishing time. Stay tuned...

9:30pm

Ian finished his run shortly after 9pm, completing the Double in an astonishing 18 hours and three minutes - nearly two hours quicker than the previous record of 19:52. Speaking to BM, he didn't even sound tired but admitted that, "it wasn't exactly a smooth run - pretty much everything that could go wrong did, I had six punctures and a headwind for the last ten hours...".

So that's five riders who've completed the South Downs Double in under 24 hours, and an impressive raising of the bar. Now all eyes will be on Steve Heading (Whyte) who's lining up for a run next Tuesday...

thats fast, hope he can continue with the same speed on the return leg.

Luke, he'll be into a head wind on the way back - not strong but enough to hurt, still he doesn't need to dip far below 10 hours on the return leg to take the outright record.

Come on Ian!

Thinking about you mate, shouldnt be far from Winchester by now, enjoy the drink when you finish. Call me when youre rested. Good Man! Dad

Do they dope test at the end of these records? Just asking like.
Posted: 22/05/2009 19:00

He'd pass the dope test, not sure about the breathalyser

Blimey, the strapline to the story says 4:30pm at Cocking - which means 13 1/2 hours into the ride and only around 35 miles to go. At that rate he'll be able to get a good few in before closing time!

He's finished - 18:03, breaking the record by the best part of TWO HOURS. Awesome. Just spoke to him on the phone, he didn't even sound tired...

What an amazing ride. It'll be some effort to go faster than that surely...
Posted: 22/05/2009 22:21

Looks like somebody's going to have to find another niche to add to the record if they want to beat that!
Posted: 22/05/2009 22:28

Amazing ride Ian!  Really good to see the progression that's being made ride on ride on the Downs.  Here's to the new King of the Double! Congratulations!

Something rather special it would seem! He is showing some pretty awesome form, good effort Ian.

A true BigDog time Ian. Awesome stuff. I think that's put it out of sight. And, by my reckoning, that's the biggest single chunk off the record in one go. Bonkers. As Charlie says, you just put a big target on your back for the BrightonBigDog race

Congratulations Ian,  Just seen your pic and I think we may have passed each other close to ditchling beacon about 8:45am ish..  If it was, you looked like you had just got on your bike you were so fresh!!! amazing acheivement!! Well Done

Lots of riding, building up to the distance, knowing (and respecting) your body and how to fuel it.

Though often I think the biggest secret is to just love riding.
