Original Source Mountain Mayhem took place over the weekend, the 11th running of the legendary 24hr race. And for the most part it was dry, a welcome change from the last couple of years. 2,351 competitors managed 12,040 laps between them, totalling an impressive 105,350 miles.

Winners included Matt Page in Solo Men with 26 laps. Matt also took the opportunity to propose to girlfriend Nia Harris: "The proposal has always been my intention – in fact I meant to do it last year but it didn’t go to plan as I had to pull out of the race after 14 hours. If I hadn’t won this year, Nia may have had to wait another year!"

Meggie Bichard won the Solo Women with 19 laps, while Team Scott won Elite Mixed with a startling 34 laps. There were of course many other categories, all with winners - full results are at www.osmountainmayhem.co.uk.

2009 was the first Mayhem with title sponsors Original Source - getting a manufacturer of shower gel on board was clearly a stroke of genius. Original Source didn't just stump up cash and tens of thousands of shower gel sachets, though - it had staff racing too. Senior Brand Manager and team leader Nigel Wolstenhole said:

"The atmosphere at Original Source Mountain Mayhem was just skin-tingling. We’ve had an amazing response to the event, with the biggest number of applicants in the event’s history. Having participated in this year’s endurance race I can definitely say Original Source Mountain Mayhem is worth getting dirty for. It’s punishing but worth it. We’re already counting down until it’s time to do it all over again next year!"

Race organiser Patrick Adams said, "There are many components that put the event together and this year has really been amazing. Riders, spectators, ambulance teams, our headline sponsors, Original Source - it’s been a huge team effort and a fantastic event. We want to be back even bigger and better next year."

A Massive thankyou to Pronghorn Racing, for lending me a PR6 to solo on! The course was amazing sunday morning, despite being on the tail end of a solo ride, i was putting in hour laps. not that it takes much to convince me, but i will definitely be back next year!

Yay for Pronghorn! Fast bikes, those. Did you win?
Posted: 24/06/2009 15:08

Sport Women team was won by a bunch of Peak Midweek gurlz, well, two regulars, a Peak Midweek occasional and someone they tricked into riding with offers of chocolate etc. Top effort.

Also, twelfth in men's solo and highest places solo singlespeed rider was another Peak Midweeker, Rich Naylar who had an absolutely blinding ride and is now thinking about actually training for it next year

Yay for us, a bunch of random trail riders who seem capable of going quite fast

It was dry? Damn, I wish I'd gone now
Posted: 24/06/2009 16:37

not totally dry, however by recent Mayhem standards ....

My forks broke on my first lap, leaving them permanently locked out, so i did a few laps of rigid SS, before ditching the bike in the pits whilst running around the arena asking manufacturers for a bike. Pronghorn delivered. I managed a few more laps, but my shoulders were ruined, and i had to take a break, in the morning my laps were stonkingly fast though. I even found myself sprinting for that one extra lap after 24hrs

A break? 11:50 minutes!?

Wish I'd gone, humbug!

Well, i may have fell asleep unintentionally... on the plus side of things, my neck was better afterwards

Any idea about nxy yrs event, some one said it could be in Derby or Margam park
Posted: 25/06/2009 19:08

Really? Derby presumably means Catton Park, which is the site for SiTS usually.

Margam would really surprise me, more technical and much much hillier.

Why they can't find a more all weather venue I don't know, if someone spits on the Eastnor course it turns to a quagmire!

Was Team McCoy there?
Posted: 25/06/2009 20:19

not sure there there was a team in Blue and red kit with JMC on it, could this be them???

I heard the contract an eastnor has ended and they have been looking for a new venue, also mentioned was the Glan Usk estate nr Crickhowell Wales. your right they need an all weather course, may be now its the time for them to do it.

The problem with alternative Mayhem courses is the space you need for the arena and camping and stuff. The actual course itself is but one of many considerations.

Mike, I think your clock is broken - I see no hour laps

Well, the first one was

Mike I agree with what your saying, Margam has the space but the coures would have to be a tougher, but its a better alll weather course I think.

There are a few places here in Wales that they could hold it remember they used to hold NPS rounds and 4 cross/downhill at Forest fields massive camping site even got lakes there now, its got a bit of everything,

Cheers Kerry
