Dawn Till Dusk Challenge 100

100 mile challenge around Leeds to raise money for charity

Posted: 15 July 2009
by David Arthur

Dawn Till Dusk Challenge 100 is a new event from Charityadventure.org.uk on 30 August aimed at experienced cyclists as well as the recreational cyclist.

The route covers countryside from Horsforth in Leeds, up through Otley and Summerbridge to Ripon, over to Boroughbridge, as far as Sheriff Hutton for the 100 mile route and Harrogate back to Poole and finally Horsforth. As the name suggests the first teams will be leaving at dawn.

The Yarnbury Rugby club is the start and finish venue for the Dawn Till Dusk Challenge 100, with free camping laid on the night before and the night after for cyclists and their families. During the cycle day there is a family ride local to the club and various kids activities on the site.

Charityadventure.org.uk are well known for their organisation of long distance rides for various charities across the UK. Having just returned from a mammoth cycle from York to Amsterdam and back with 50 novice female cyclists, raising over £25,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, spokesperson Ginny Leonard says: "We're extremely excited about this event. It’s a totally new format for us and is one aimed at the more experienced cyclists as well as the recreational cyclist.

"It is open to riders from every discipline, we have Audax riders, local cycle club teams, mountain bikers and family teams already entered. Some of the riders are even doing the ride in fancy dress! We hope to have a great weekend and attract some positive attention for Leeds cyclists in general."

Hi.

A little extra information on this event is available on the Dawn till Dusk website at http://dawntillduskchallenge100.org.uk.

There are route maps for both the 100k and 100mile versions available there (in the 'News' section) and you can also sign up online too. Entry fees are £100 per team of 'up to 4'. Minimum team size is 2 for safety reasons.

We're also holding a bbq/disco/bar at the Yarnbury Rugby Club on the evening. Friends/Families are welcome, and as the news item stated, you can camp for free the night before and the night after if you wish, but you'll need to bring your own tents, etc!

We've also arranged with the club for bikes to be stored inside (alarmed) so that you don't have to worry about your pride and joy going walkabout while you sleep!

I've personally done the 100k route on a mountain bike and the 100 mile route on a road bike. Both were challenging for me but I'm no Lance Armstrong on the hills!! However, the route is beautiful and you'll have all day to push yourselves!

Oh, and all of the entry fees that we receive will be donated to charity. Quite an important point!! You don't need to raise a penny, so no bugging friends, family and colleagues required!

Hi Rich. This sounds like a great event. I'm in Bromley but think I could quite easily get a team together from work and travel up all together on the Saturday morning (I'm sure we could go shopping in Leeds in the afternoon!!!)

Could you tell me what time we could arrive at the rugby club to set up the tents, etc? Also, my friend has a gps device for her bike - would you be able to give us the route in gpx format or is it all paper based?

Many thanks, and I look forward to taking part, it sounds like quite a challenge!!

Cath.

Hi Cath.

Yup, plenty of shopping to be had in and around Leeds!!! I'm sure it'll keep you more than occupied!

You can arrive pretty much anytime on Saturday afternoon to set up your tents. The bar at the Yarnbury will be open for the people staying over that evening, and also on the Sunday evening of course. You'll be able to store your bikes (if reqd) both nights too.

Route wise, we will be giving all teams both of the paper versions (100mile and 100km) as both routes are the same up until Boroughbridge (30 miles or so from the start) at which point they split. It's then that you can decide whether or not to go for the 100 mile version or just head back to Leeds on the 100km version. I can also provide GPX files for both routes which should import into most decent gps devices. I think you can even see and download the routes from the d2d website (http://dawntillduskchallenge100.org.uk).

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Craz.

Isn't it a stroke of luck that the event falls just after pay day!!!!

Have checked the website and have been able to download the routes into gpx format. I'll ask my friend if she can import them to her gps device. Out of interest, it said I could have them in gpxx format too. What's that all about?!

Ooh I'm quite excited about it now!! It's quite a good idea giving the option of doing either of the routes too! I think we'll start off with all good intentions and then change our minds at lunchtime!!! haha.

Oh, I presume there's a load of car parking available??

Cath.

Haha, isn't it just! Make sure you save some pennies for the BBQ and disco

Have a think about which charity you'd nominate too. We'll be picking one on the evening and all of the entry fees will be donated and you never know, it may be the one your team have picked!

Glad to hear that you've managed to download the route. I think it's good that people can have a good look at them first. Some events keep them under lock and key until you've signed up! Seems a little odd to me but hey, I know nothing!!

GPXX is (I think!) just an extension to the standard GPX XML  data format. I've no idea what they've added that's of any use and I've never even tried to use a GPXX file. I'll stick with what works ta very much

Car parking is available on site yes. Not sure of the number of spaces but don't think that it will be an issue.

Posted: 16/07/2009 15:11

Will do (pennies and charity)!!!

XML what?!? I have no idea what you're talking about!!! I'm sure it'll be fine though.

Thanks for the help. If I think of anything else I'll be in touch!

Hi Rich,

I think I have a team together but one of the guys asked about support cars.... He recently did a day race ride adn had to drop out half way through as he snapped a spoke and didn't have the tools to sort it. He couldn't get his sponsorship and it cost him a fortune to get back to his car! Understandbly he is hesitant about joining us but I think I saw somwhere that you are providing a support car. Is this right?

Also how far off shops etc are we at teh rugby club for breakfast etc.

Cheers

Liam

Hi Liam. Two points on the support front. The first is that we have a bike mechanic from Edinburgh Bikes on the course with a variety of spares and tools in case of minor (repairable by roadside) problems. We've also got support vehicles that can come out and collect up to 4 bikes and passengers. As for breakfast, the Yarnbury will be cooking bacon butties on the sunday and monday mornings, otherwise you're looking at a 5 minute ride into Horsforth to the local shops. Rich.
Posted: 21/07/2009 16:19

Great, thanks for that. We thought we may manage a warm up pub ride on the Sat night if anyone was interested

Cath I reckon you will need refreshing after an afternoon's shopping!

Liam

Posted: 21/07/2009 16:35

Well i'm sure it wouldn't hurt to get a little practise in..... for sunday night that is
Posted: 21/07/2009 16:49

By the way, we have someone interested in taking part who doesn't have any local cycling buddies and he's wondering if there's someone else in the same boat who'd like to team up.

If that's you, please contact me and I'll put you in touch.

Alternatively, if you already have a team of 2 or 3 and you wouldn't mind another person joining your team (it makes it a little cheaper if nothing else!) then also let me know.

Cheers

We were thinking of getting a team t-shirt done, are you selling them for this ride?

Ta

Liam

Posted: 22/07/2009 13:00

We are. They're available to order during the online registration, at the same point you decide whether or not you want the EBC gift voucher, etc.

Rich.

Posted: 22/07/2009 14:41

I think you may be right Liam Don't want to wander too far from the camping place though. Where's the nearest pub??
Posted: 22/07/2009 14:47

erm not sure of the nearest but I know where the best ones are!! There are loads of options in Horsforth but they tend to be pretty rammed on a Sat and Im not sure how safe it would be leaving my wheels attached to a wall where drunk students can access it the night before a challenge ride! Im sure I will come up with something though.....

What sort of bike do you ride Cath?

Posted: 22/07/2009 14:54

It's a Kona Lisa HT (last years model). I don't really know all that much about it but it was a nice shade of light blue!!!!

Posted: 22/07/2009 15:14

cool, typical girlie answer!! So do you mostly ride off road then? I guess you have to travel a little way from Bromley to find anywhere decent
Posted: 22/07/2009 15:18

There are a few places but I normally just ride it to work and back. On weekends I go for the occasional longer ride with friends down the river to the nearest pub for lunch!
Posted: 22/07/2009 16:03

Is anyone else on here doing this event??
Posted: 22/07/2009 16:04

Don't forget the Yarnbury bar will be open on Saturday and Sunday evening
Posted: 22/07/2009 17:33

maybe a quick warm up spin round the rugby pitch, lock the bike up and straight into the bar on site then??!!

Posted: 22/07/2009 22:06

...with perhaps very little emphasis on the warm up!!
Posted: 23/07/2009 09:22

Now that's just defeatist!
Posted: 23/07/2009 13:47

My warm up will be fighting the Leeds shoppers during the day
Posted: 24/07/2009 09:07

Errr, no fighting in Leeds City Centre please!!!
Posted: 27/07/2009 08:11

I've just realised.... it's only 4 weeks on Sunday till the event!!!!! I need to start thinking about what to bring!
Posted: 29/07/2009 09:08

Bike, tent and the rest of your team? Easy!
Posted: 29/07/2009 14:52

Flat shoes for shopping!!! Very helpful I know

Posted: 30/07/2009 11:32

Very
Posted: 30/07/2009 15:13

That's actually a good point Ginny, thanks!
Posted: 31/07/2009 13:44

I'm just thinking about what kit I need, don't really want to carry alot if poss, are there plenty of water stops on the way round?

Cheers

Liam
