I like that Juan. Very nice!

FWIW, i've had no problems running ISIS Turbine's on an SKF for nearly a year now

Ta :-)

I had an SKF Isis on my singlespeed right through winter and it's still going strong in the Peak despite having destroyed everything else Isis that it's ever touched. It kind of helped that the general dislike of Isis meant that the Turbine cranks were reduced as well...

A couple of things I didn't mention are that the frame weighed in at around 1500 grammes, which is pretty reasonable for something that'll take a Pike and it's built into a lighter bike than the Marin.

The other is that I found Setavento great to deal with even though things did sometimes take a while to sort through. The welding seems pretty good and the head gusset.

Oh, and it's fast as feck - not in a race bike way, but it's a really good all-round trail bike with a lot of zip to it but some ooomph as well, if that makes sense :-)

Very nice Juan, interesting idea copying your already excellent frame.

Did you get them to keep the measurements so we can order a " Jon Doran " ??

Getting the Rocky Ridge copied was a no brainer really. I knew I liked the geometry and it worked for me, so it made sense. My big worry was getting the dimensions right. Every time I measured it, they came up slightly different, so in the end I just sent them the frame. That slowed things down a bit, but it meant that I couldn't screw it up.

I'm guessing Setavento keep the dimensions on file - the design's all done with CAD, so I guess you could always ask :-)

You could have two Rockyventos for the price of one Cove Hummer...

Any way, back to the house move.

I've heard property development 'is where it's at'
You can then afford tarty Ti frames then.

Waddya mean 'tarty'? It's half the price of a Hummer, I think it's a bit of a bargain really...

Fwiw, I did contact Marin for the geometry. They spent ages not being able to tell me, despite actually trying pretty hard.

It was an '04 frame that I wanted replicated and they simply didn't have the measurements. I did find them on the US site, but a mate who works for ATB Sales - Marin distributors - tells me that the geometry on the frame was a bit random and just happened to come out spot on.

The '05 Rocky Ridge had a steeper head angle and felt a bit like a shopping trolley to me, so I wanted to make sure it was exactly the same as what I wanted.

I could have built it with harder core bits - 321s on Hopes, Saint cranks or something - but it's more of a quick trail bike that can do technical stuff and is light enough to climb fast than a full-on bludgeon bike. It feels about right to me now.

I reckon it'll be class in Spain with Maxxis High Roller super tacky 2.35s on it.

£650!

That's a bargain*. I nearly bought an off the shelf one last year, for £500, until I noticed a rather large crack on the headtube of my big bike.
Oh well, maybe next year.

*For a custom Ti frame.

Enjoy!

I'm seriously interested in this bike.

What size frame does it equate to and what size rider are you, legs, reach etc...?

Also, were you lucky enough to get the frame as a drawing from the designers...?

(If they do that kinda thing of course)

It's basically a direct copy of a 17.5-inch 2004 Rocky Ridge. I'm about five nine and three quarters with a 32-inch(ish) inside leg, no idea what reach etc.

Setavento can either build a bike based on your physical dimensions - there's a form on their web site you fill in with a load of measurements - or build completely to your own spec.

As the final stage in the design process, they send you a drawing - as a PDF I think - which is based on their CAD file. However I asked them to send me the actual CAD file and a mate, who's an engineer, went through it for me to check the details. Then you sign off the drawing and they make the frame.

The only significant changes I made to the basic design were to specify no bottle cage mounts - I don't use a cage, ever - and to run the rear brake hose guides down the righthand side of the top tube so the hose routes in front of the headtube, down the top tube, then crosses back over behind the seatpost. The normal routing is designed to work with continental / US lefthand front brake set-ups. I didn't have the headbage either, it's a bit too roadie for me, so I'm going to get a Jen Green badge made up to my own spec at some point.

Like I said above, I sent Setavento the frame so the geometry was 100 per-cent spot on. ATB Sales were very helpful, but simply didn't have the exact measurements for the older frames.

If you're seriously interested, drop James Laurence at Setavento a line and take it from there. He's a nice guy, very helpful and was happy to take my ideas on board right the way through the process.

Thanyewverymuch Juan, I'll get in contact with Setavento as you suggest.

No worries. You realise if you copy my bike then I'll have to kill you. And then, logically I suppose, Marin will have to kill me too...
