Sorry to disappoint you but "Les 24 heures de Pomps" has been running for as long as I've been living here so it certainly isn't the worlds first 24 hour road race. If the Pomps event is anything to go by candidates should sign up now. it's a 24 hour party without the mud.

http://www.bikerace.co.uk/ - not 24 hour but same idea - I think the point is most of the current 24h events are sort of audax style on open roads - the usp here is he closed circuit. - (stands back and waits to be corrected)

It's a road race on closed roads, rather than a sportive or a time trial or anything else. I'm not at all surprised that the French have done it already, though
