I like the look of this set, significantly cheaper than XT but looks much nicer than LX. It also looks fairly sturdy as well. I think I might go SLX when I upgrade to 9spd...

shimano are definitely onto a winner - again

SLX is the new LX isn't it?
it might as well be, maybe the marketing bods have tried to cunningly divert attention away from that by adding the "S". did we notice, are we confused? nope

SLX replaces Hone and most of LX. There is also a new LX group aimed at touring bikes.
Are they going to be changing LX significantly then? At the moment it doesn't seem to be touring orientated to me.
And if SLX is the new LX, what does that make LX? The new Alivio?
Depends which LX you are looking at DVV. The 2009 touring LX can be identified by the code T660 where as SLX is M660. Outgoing LX was M580.

2009 LX touring group. Trust me, I know a little about Shimano
Ah ok. I haven't seen the new LX yet then.

Dunno but I chose SLX cranks over XT. Have to say I'm impressed with them performance wise & they look pretty good too.
They use to have STX and then they put an RC at the end to give STX-RC What next ?
i loved the chromica finish on the RC chainset
*reminisces over the old RC grouppo*
i've still got most of it on the hack bike, apart from the chainset which i lent out to a mate and the hubs, i chose the black LX instead.
I had a couple of bits on my old hack/commuter that I sold about a year ago. The front mech was definitely original on the bike & was still working fine a decade later.
Recently made the switch back to Shimano after a few years with SRAM and have to say that I am very impressed with the SLX shifters and rear mech I have; much, much stiffer rear mech than the soft-as-cheese X9 and a minimal profile in comparison.

HH, thats because SRAM gear stuff actually sucks and is very expensive compared to Shimano's, shame shimano can't make chains although recent SRAM chains haven't been great even so changed my brand there to.
Shimano can't make chains? Odd how many people run them with no problems. Reading the fitting instructions helps.
