Maybe i'm stupid, but I don't get what makes it UK specific.

It is a specific model for the UK market ie it is not available in other countries.

Are all our bikes not somehow UK specific then? Like paintjobs, kit etc. varies from country to country.

Hell, even which side the brake levers are on can make a bike UK specific, seems like marketing were struggling to find a selling point to me.

It's not, the pr doesn't say anything about mud tyres at all. I was just being facetious...

Last years model was called the 5.5 XT but as it is not all XT this year it can't be called that.

No.

I still think the marketing department were just wanting to get out on the Christmas piss.

But then I hold Marketing folks just slightly above Estate Agents and just below Arthur Skargill in my world hierarchy.

Glad you substantiated that there Mike. Helps me loads.

The 5.5 UK was created because dealers and consumers wanted a Shimano specified bike without having to buy a frame and build one up.  Although SRAM kit is perfectly good there are riders out there who want the big S so this was created to fill that gap.  The marketing department were not part of the decision, they just have the task of letting people know the bike exists.

Simple answer to a simple question

I'll elaborate, but it doesn't really add much. Unique-to-the-UK models are pretty rare from major manufacturers. At best you might get different ones for UK/Europe to the US or Asia. It doesn't usually get more specific than that.
