I wonder if they're not being stolen for profit, but rather by the "stickman" type who believes that bikes have no place disturbing his nice quiet forest...

I'm not surprised they get removed. They're a blot on the landscape. What's wrong with a blob of paint on a tree or a trail side rock?

I shouldn't think that they were much of a blot in their unpainted state. It's not as if FC pine plantations are particularly scenic anyway

They must be being stolen for fire wood, lot of folk now getting log burners and going out at the weekend huntin firwooooood!

I must admit that was my first thought althought the firewood theory also holds some water.

What amazes me is the size of the tings though. Other than at the start of dedicated cycle routes I've never seen such huge wayposts. What's wrong with using the usual half fence post with a direction  badge on it? Must be a hell of a lot cheaper.

some one is probably building a summer house out of them, could they not have found something smaller!

also could be sold as sleepers they are so big!

Perhaps they made them big so they're harder to steal?

I don't think they're all that big (the press release said "up to 2m"), possibly just the novice trail ones - super easy to spot, user-friendly.

We've even put posts in concrete foundations, but chainsaws have been used to cart them off.

That's some dedication/stupidity. If you need firewood, it's a hard way of going about it.

I'm thinking along lines of NBT, disgruntled walker types.

Yeah, me too. Surely you're not gonna go wandering round a fireroad/singletrack to collect a little wood. I reckon they'll find the posts in their own forest 10m inside the treeline.

Presumably they cut them down with a wheelbarrow before carting them off with a chainsaw?

If there 2m above ground they must be at least 3m overall length.  Its a really big Job to dig those suckers out... I know, i've planted a few at Wharncliffe.  If its disgruntled walkers, they must be pretty bloody big blokes..

Looks more like Pikeys..

"chainsaw and land rover. we have blocked about 10 entry points off the old mineral railway but we suspect they have got a key.

Would be nice if people left 'em alone - last time I was at Sherwood Pines it took us an hour and a half to find a way back to the Visitor Centre

Maybe it's CHEP running short of pallets.

The woods are not inhabited by any walkers, but those posts are nice bits of wood (when unpainted) and certain elements in Mansfield won't ask any questions about the source of cheap timber.

Bear in mind the place is next to the desert, where plenty of people ride dirt bikes and quads illegally and I'm surprised the posts lasted as long as they did.

Lastly, the posts on the xc loop are the usual little ones, so hopefully less desireable.

smear them in dog crap. drill them like a collander.

come to think of it staple heavy gauge wire to them, not worth buggering a chainsaw blade for "free" timber
