Lol @ Cottydale stickers! I've always wanted a 2x9 setup, but don't think I could get the ratios I would like. 29-48 and 34-11 would suit me fine I think, but i don't think there are any reasonably priced cranksets that would do this are there? And I don't know if a front mech would like such a big jump, they're rubbish enough on a standard setup!

48/11? Are you doing time trials or something?
Crikey, 29-48, that is a monster set-up indeed! I think you'll struggle with a 19 tooth jump. I'm pretty much on the limit with a 15t difference and wouldn't recommend more than that. Although as they say, where there's a will there's normally a way.

I enjoy the kind of riding where you have to think very very fast about line choices, even if the terrain isn't hugely technical at lower speeds, and I sometimes find that 44-11 isn't high enough. Perhaps 46 would be enough, but I have spun out 44 on a number of occasions. I think this happens to me at about 43mph. Perhaps my spinning technique is just too bad!

You want to go for the double. With those legs you'll be on for a sub 15hr ride!!

That's a nice bike indeed. Like the paint job. Re doing a double, you can get an Extralite 30t inner ring, I run that with a TA 42t outer, my little legs struggle with a 30/44 set up. Not wishing to get too off topic as this is your bike thread Mike but:

so how did you get hold of the frame, did canondale build one for you??
Mike, unfortunately my fitness isn't currently that great at all - been sitting in an office too much. Besides, my performance has always been best in sprint events rather than endurance ones. I don't recall getting ever getting beaten out of a start gate in the few events I've done, but OTOH I'm usually the slow one at the back after an hour or two's riding. Riding in the Alps my sanity has been questioned a few times by friends over the speed I'll ride the rougher tracks at. Hate switchbacks though!

so how did you get hold of the frame, did canondale build one for you?? Here's the irony of it all. I was trying to get one of the custom Scalpel-Six13 frames for a couple of years. Tried everything and was about to buy one off of the team (Kashi's, which had done a couple of seasons on the world cup circuit so wasn't in the best condition). But it was the frame I'd been looking for so the deal was nearly done. Rewind to the back end of 07 and I'm working late in our office in Switzerland when what do I stumble across? Yep, a brand new Scalpel-Six13 frame tucked under a desk with complimentry 3mm layer of dust on it! I could barely believe it. My heart started beating harder than any climb I went up on the SDW. Palms sweaty. My dream to make a custom Scalpel-Six13 was born. It took forever to design and put togehter, but that's the fun part. Finally finished at the end of July I only rode it for 6 hours before well and truly beasting it on the SDW last Friday. It was well and truly worth the wait! It felt so good to be out there on "my" bike without a care in the world!

I can only find dust and odd bread crumbs under my desk! any jobs at dale? I am blond, make half decent tea and like my bikes

With those credentials, the job's yours!

Serge, Mike works for Cannondale, which helps a bit I sometimes find that 44-11 isn't high enough. Perhaps 46 would be enough, but I have spun out 44 on a number of occasions. I think this happens to me at about 43mph. Perhaps my spinning technique is just too bad! BITD we used to reckon on being able to get 1mph per chainring tooth with a 12T sprocket, so you ought to be able to get more than 43 out of a 44/11

all i can find under my desk is glowing spiders! rubbish.
Train the spiders and form a mutant spider army, then you will be able to take whatever you want from cannondale (they always looked the kind that would be scared of spiders to me).
Serge, get bitten by one then go save new york

Hi Mike C - Congratulations on your record breaking ride, an amazing time especially when the trail is far from perfect thanks to the wet summer. It will take an insane amount of training for any mtb endurance rider to go any faster. BTW how did you transfer the SDW route to your edge 705? I would be interested to know.

Hi Neal, Thanks for your message. I didn't have the route pre-loaded to the 705. I was using the Garmin as more of a route logger than navigator if that makes sense. If you check out the messages related for the actual ride article that went live on the site yesterday then you'll see in one of the messages that Neil Newell has posted the full route (and sections) in different GPS formats, so the .gpx should work with the 705. Neil's the guru when it comes to GPS mapping, logging, tracking! I definitely recommend the external battery system that I mentioned to up the battery life of the 705. That was the tech revelation of the ride Enjoy! Mike

Thanks Mike, Hope to see you at the bike show in London as need a bit of advice for my own SDW challenge (one way under 10hrs). A 45yr old needs all the help he can get!
Yep, I'll be at the show so feel free to drop by the stand (E4) and see all the lovely new 09 kit. Of course, I'll pretend to talk to you about that, so it looks like I'm doing my job, when in fact we can talk about the Downs, riding and how to get you under 10 hours! The important things in life! Cheers.

You will be doing your job ok as I am A Cannondale Punter! I look forward to visit the stand next week. Cheers.
