 the paint is absolutely dreadful, it chips off at the slightest provocation, they should have anodised it. Other than that it's a great bike and is a dream to ride round the peak district and I'm having to fond more challenging routes to get some feeling of danger back in my riding.

 my only worry with this bike is that because it is only 28lbs for such a long travel bike, will it be strong enough?

Oh yes, I ought to mention that they all now come with Maverick's extra drop-out clips - the ones that belong to the demo bike are still in a Jiffy bag at ATB Sales :-)

 I couldn't agree with you more Mike. 15 years ago I rode my first proper MTB, a Marin Muirwoods. Cromo frame and fork, beartrap pedals and the latest thing "STI". Having one bike for all needs was so simple, so its kind of ironic that this is the first Whyte to truly capture my attention in that it shares pedigree with the latest Marins. I'm no donwhiller but since going XC I have really got to appreciate what good, well measured suspension can you do for you as a rider. Lightweight, medium travel, XT, Hopes - perfect.
Now where was that spare 2.5k?

 The paint thing may be for showroom appeal, anodising is practical but not always pretty or consistent. Lets face it probably only chips on the lower side. You could always do what motor manufacturers and Val Singleton and put some clear sticky back plastic on the vunerable areas.

All the recent reviews for this bike have been great- I sooo want one Hmmm anyone interested in a 1 year old mount vision, but then again I probably cant get a new bike past the missus this year!

 An Intense 5.5EVP would build up into a similar sort of bike, (but cost even more!)

 bones, there's a company called anochrome in the man. area, we use them at work, and they're o.k. just make sure you tell them exactly what you want/expect.

i reckon a bike covered in scratches looks good. It's a sign that the bike has been well used and abused and isn't just used for posing on

lazydave I get your point but this is an engineering issue. If the finish is bad what else have they cut corners on. It's not the cheapest bike and although I like the ride a lot i'm still annoyed about the finish of my 46.
Another small gripe I have is that the Web and brochure picks (and the bike I test rode) was a much nicer kind of gun metal grey. Mine (and I think all now do)came with a much lighter finish.

Mike, what size of frame was the test bike (that I assume you were riding on the last BM skive). It looked a bit of a monster, sitting pretty tall. Didn't slow you down though....

I know my 17 " 46 feels tall to get onto but once onboard and the sags taken into account it's fine, just takes a bit of getting used to I suppose
