Uh Oh, that looks like a big mess to sort out.

Do they do skewers though? I still use XTR ones.

So now what do I do?

I wanted Hope skewers, but they come undone. So my LBS said get Shimano.... they snap!

So, what skewers do I get? Or should I glue my wheels in?

Hope ones are shite, avoid.

I'd stick with Shimano, they're still the best on the market IMO, and it's not exactly the first product to have a recall. In fact, I'm pretty sure the standard Deore ones don't have a nickel plated spindle, so they'll be exempt anyone.

If you don't want them, then Bontrager, Mavic, Salsa are all good.

get shimano, only certain snap

i've never had a problem with any of mine, but none of mine are light :-)

I'm glad they're prepared to admit to a problem. Hope just keep selling their crap skewers.

I got a pair of these in steel and they work well, not a single problem with coming undone or anything.

Yep, they're actually ok. As are the Outland ones from Raleigh, £10 for wheel and seatpost QR, can't be bad.

...I use mavic skewers on all my bikes.

I wasn't saying use SRAM skewers (duh), i was saying, that yet again Shimano have cocked up with something or other.

It was more a tongue in cheek comment, but oh well.

But I agree with Mike, at least they've put their hand up, unlike Hope, who refuse to admit their skewers are shite!

The cheap Mavic ones are dire too, a friend of mine had one come undone while he was riding, not nice. The Crossmax ones are good, but mine always ended up rattling, or the little pin fell out and thus the lever came off.

Me too, only it's not too clear who to go to. I got them of CRC and I dont want to send them to them, my local bike shop sells Shimano but he's not listed as a Shimano Authorised dealer and the local dealer shimano recommend as a Shimano Service Center is about 60 miles away.

Yeah i know what you mean wayne.
I got the wheels off crc as a pre-built one with 717 rims just after christmas, so dont when the skewer is from, could have been wheels built months before..
And I am so very poor this week I cant afford the bus to nearest proper bike shop

shimano skewers are known to be the best skewers out there!!
HOPE produced a skewer that was bluudy dangerous, and continued selling them!! Shimano will replace any skewer they think to be slightly faulty, and imo thats a bluddy good company.
I've got 20 year old shimano skewers that work fine. i doubt any sram product will last that long.

sram is the emporers new clothes people

please don't be fooled....

I've never had a problem with my Hope skewers. But I have heard that they are bad. Until mine come undone on me I'm happy to keep using them!!

And as for the Shimano skewers...They've been making them for a damn sight longer than most manufacturers out there and just because they have a bad batch it shouldn't be putting people off them at all..

People still buy Ford Mondeos, and there was a batch of them that used to put you in the nearest hedge if you took your hand off the wheel for a split second! Fact

The OE skewers on my Marin kept loosening off, so I upgraded to Hope.
These have performed faultlessly for the last 12 months.
What`s the problem with them?
Show/hide user stats
They don't usually do up sufficiently tightly, and often come undone.
