The comment on the verdict about making you want to go out and ride - does it? I've watched the Collective and thought it was a very good film - but not inspiring me to go ride my bike - it didn't leave me wanting to replay it and I was content with watching it once (I've seen it a fair few times now though and my opinion hasn't changed) - I watched Roam suspecting it would be the same...and I found it was - the riding skill these guys have is phenomenal - I'm not knocking that, the quality of the filming seems to be just as good to me - I'm not knocking that - but it certainly doesn't make me want to go and ride my bike, nor watch it more than once a week - it's just missing the buzz - it's gone for the glam side fo things i.e. very polished and slick moves, well choreographed stuff - nothing wrong with that, it does make it a very good film.
I watched Dirt a day after Roam - About 10 minutes into Dirt, I had to switch it off and go ride my bike...totally different style of filming and much less polished off - but the action caught the spirit of riding for me.
Roam is very good but if you don't do that sort of riding, I can't see it inspiring you...

 I don't have a DVD player :(

The inspiring thing for me in the Collective was not so much the massive hits and big air these guys go for but the love of the sport that comes across and the backcountry riding in BC they do where its just fun fast singletrack and small airs
you feel that for all the big hits and adrenaline they are reknown for here is what we all do and all love, not just what they get paid for. Under the skin there is still a trail rider who savours the open air and a good trail to enjoy.
I get the same thing from ski films - steep and deep with big air is the show stealer but big sweeping turns on wide open powder fields is tied to how I ski and enjoy and inspires me to get up on the mountain again.

I like watching stuff like the Collective et al as its cool to see what is possible on a bike.
But the sort of stuff that makes me want to go and ride are scruffy home made videos that knock around the internet. They aren't people with a budget, they're just out riding and I can identify with that more as they are hitting drops and jumps that I could see myself doing, unlike 30' cliff drops etc.

Have to disagree with Dick, I think The Collective catches a lot more soul rather than action, action, action. More like some progressive surf films. I think The Collective reflects more lifestyle mountain biking rather than racing and suffering or heavymetal DH. Most of the other films out there seem to push onto the viewer a kind "this is what you should be doing" rather than "this is what you could do" attitude. The collective doesn't does this it sort of lets you make up your own mind. In my opinion of course, each to their own. Haven't seen Roam yet.

both brilliant films. I agree, they are more about the soul of the sport. this is what riding bikes is about, getting out there and riding with your buddies where you want, rather than eyeing up a 40 foot huck for half and hour cos it makes 14 year old boys think your cool.
it just so happens that the guys in the films can ride a bit better than you and me....
Dirt though. amazing film. still makes me just want to get out there and ride.

I think the Collective (and possibly Roam) is more of a post ride film than a *get up and go riding* inspiration film.
As it seems to focus more on the idea of reviewing what happened and how it makes you feel, rather than giving you a boot up the backside with some thrash metal soundtrack.
Ideal for watching while chilling after a great ride with a beer.

I'm off work sick, so I've just oredered the collective off CRC for £16...
It better be good!
|
 |
What about these Kona disorder and all that, what they like?
|
 |
They're rather more in your face, but about the pinnacle of such films. I quite like 'em for that reason.

Karlos, it is a good film...so is Roam...the quality of the camera work is very good, the skills shown by the riders are amazingly impressive.
I guess I'm just disappointed in the fact that it doesn't inspire me. The music is very good - no real hardcore heavy metal stuff...good to listen to just for the music.
Not sure about the soul idea either...perhaps it's just not striking the right chord with so I'm looking at them through blinkered eyes...although, I'd rather watch them than other biking videos...just not before I go riding - that'll be Dirt back on!

the NWD's are good, because they aren't just mtb'ing - in one theres a decent sized section on some crazy guy on a unicycle

I've just started playing around with filming and so far have produced two dvd's, with just just a helmet cam and a digital cam-corder. Finishing is not as flash as the pro jobs such as roam or collective, but still has full menus, soundtracks and extras. But from the people who have seen it gives them the desire to get out and ride. The dvds are based around a group of riding and racing mates, filming from the 7 stanes scotland to spain. No 30 ft drops in our collection just sweet singletrack and trails tackled by everyday riders....

Sounds good mate, why don't you get a clip online as a preview for us ;-)

I'll see what i can do...

www.broadbandsports.com is a good palce to see a reasonable collection of riding vids and to post your own. Quite a bit of the amatuer footage is bloody fantastic, you've just got to ignore the annoying little Canadian scrots saying things like; 'OMFgzzzz! dat dropz iz wel phaat!!!111!!'
|
 |
Well I recieved the collective DVD today and I've just watched it, id woz Wikd doods I iz todally stoked wiv it!
Bit shortchanged though £16 for fourty minutes.
Suppose its always nice to be reminded of how crap you actually are at riding :-/

Very much agree with both of those!
Apparently the films are mega expensive to make for the amount of footage they get, hence you rarely see them cheaper than what you got it for.
