how do these people (soloists and pairs) keep riding through the night? your average set of lights will have a max of about 3hrs light, and with a 12 hr race, surely this will mean each team will need about 4 sets of lights. charging might be apossibility, with quick chargers i suppose, so thats 2 sets then, if your rich... how do people manage this? i suppose people beg borrow and steal? or do some people really have multiple sets of lights?
just interested really...

 Eat plenty of carrots...

Carrots, or lots of charging. The guys from Lumicylce had a small powerstation/charging rig setup, and were offering free charging. That's one option. The other was to take along your own car battery and converter, and charge your lights in your own campsite. Or treat your friends nice and borrow batteries from them.
We were riding a Lumicycle Hid (a very impressive light, review coming soon). One battery lasted the first five laps ok, and to be on the safe side we borrowed another from Lumicycle to be on the safe side.

2 batteries is the standard thing, charge one/use one.
D2D really was awesome fun, hands down the best enduro this year! Helped by the fact our pair (George Budd/Ruth Owen-Evans) won, our mens team (including me) came 3rd, and our girly team won!
You missed a treat everyone who wasn't there! Didn't realise you were there David, would've given you a shout!

we didn't realise we were there till the very last minute. Our preparation was rubbish, traffic meant we got there late, then found out there was no water on site meaning a quick dash to the supermarket at 6pm. Then realising i hadn't eaten much all day i cooked up a huge dish of pasta right before the start. Que stomach 'issues' for the first 6 hours :(
great fun though, been meaning to do it for years. solo next year i reckon, if i can borrow enough lights that is
You only need 2 batteries, if you blagged one from Lumi sure you can do the same again!
Brilliant event. Did it the previous 2 years and was gobsmacked by how many more people there were this year.
We came 20th in the four man team category. :) but that was out of 79 teams!
Also made the mistake of trying to hang on Jenn Hopkins rear wheel along a bit of fire road...yeah that lasted all of 2 seconds :)
Or alternatively talk nicely to your friends and borrow their lights!
Top event though, best enduro of the year - roll on 2007!!!!

I've just acquired a Lumicycle HID pro light system with 5 hour run time but they do an endurance battery which will give you 9 hours runtime so you can practically kill the night now.
Or you can just follow some-one elses set of lights, and only use your own when you need them. Only thing is it would be a bit of a problem if everyone did this.
Although if in a pair, I suppose you could switch places and share batteries....and I suppose you can switch them off on the roady bits....and ermm night vision goggles!!
Actually, night vision googles probably aren't bad idea if you have the cash
Night vision goggles use batteries as well. The ones I've used take 2 D cells. And when someone comes at you with their HID blazing you can forget ANY vision for a couple of seconds.
I'd stick to lights for racing.

Missed it this year due to bone healing. Some mates did it and it sounded ace.
On the light front, it's expensive lights with a quick charge that work.
Plus most endurance race seem to take place in the summer months, at the twenty four/twelve lights were needed around the 10 o'clock area until 4:30/5 o'clock so two batteries on your lights should see you through the night. In the winter mini power stations are needed to keep you running.

i bought dinottes ... which you can ride most of the sections on the average 24 hour course on quarter power ....
i got 8 hours out of them at relentless + a 2 hour road ride through the week off one charge and they werent dead (altho they were saying charge me)
so its easily possible ...
we got our arses wooped by you guys (st andrews) at relentless .... mainly cause we were doing it in pairs and you guys were in quads lol but your team were storming ... 3rd i think
stathpeffer .... last year lights on about 4pm .... lights off about 6 am !!

hmmm, will be looking at light reviews soon then. get your oppinions ready!
have to say, i'm looking forward to my first race with st andrews... my new frame finally arrived today, but of tweaking here and there and she'll be ready. think it'll be a bit of a monster on the enduros! (i hope)

Ride on a clear night with a full moon. Did it last winter at Innerleithan but we didn't ride all night and we did use lights most of the time, but on the hillside out of the trees they weren't needed.
Use Exposure and/ or Use joystick. 8 Hour duration. Small and very light as well as bright
two lumicycle batts with a HID lamp gave me 12 hours of extremely bright light...
just swapped em over at around 6 hours...
I used a Niterider Moab which gave me 8 hours on full power and was mega bright.
We also had a Cateye Tripleshot with two battery packs and two Edison's.
i used tinted swimming goggles, 6 candles and a white stick, didnt do very well so next year i plan on strapping a sunbed to the back of my pack facing forwards obviously, and running it off a v12 chevy short block motor, so dont bother taking your lights
