Can Race Face's new seat post design make saddle setup a breeze? We find out...

I had one of these when they first came out. The 'occasional squeaking' that is mentioned in the review turned into a great big crack when the bonding that attaches the top of the seatpost to the mechanism failed. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience with this seatpost?

That's a bit worrying Matt. I first used one of these seatposts on a test bike last summer, and it had a habit of creaking non-stop all the time, but this test version is a lot quieter

mines an evolve (cheaper alloy) and I haven't hand any problems at all with it. Maybe the Deus is a bit wimpier being lighter etc?
I've got the 280gram area Evolve to, damn nice post totally different top design though, 1 peice not a attached bit at the top, so shouldn't suffer :)

Really easy adjustment and does looking pleasingly different to anything else out there.

I have to say that I think the old XY and XYO looked much better and none of mine (I won 3!) have ever creaked - it was a great design and RF probably shouldn't have changed it!
Ahhh glad I got the old style one then :) without the bonded top :)

Yes, don't know enough about the new post, but my XY is going strong after many years of use, looks good and the clamp works really well.
Hey I got lucky, few weeks later on that post :)

Thats never happened before.

After it snapped off the first time, I took it back to my shop and they tried to glue it back on for me. The second time it happened they swapped it for an XY. I personally prefer the look of the Deus, but didn't want to risk the same thing happening again. Both times it snapped off while I was racing - not ideal!

about a month ago mine snapped completely about an inch above the frame - so not exactly the same failure as yours though. i had zero other problems with it - other than a tendancy to slip down no matter how tight i did the clamp bolt up. i'll not be buying another. either a thomson or a new hope seatpost is on my list now.

try an evolve; only about £35 and probably strongger..

I had an XY0, the zero layback version of the last 'Best Seatpost Ever', and wasn't too impressed. The saddle rotated under load on a few occasions despite huge amounts of bolt tightening, and the black coating came off almost as soon as it was installed. I also had a SyStem XC stem, which was equally unimpressive - lardy and creaky. Raceface = hype? Dunno, but I'll be sticking to Roox/Thomson/Ritchey stems and seatposts in future, thanks.

yeah they do seem a bit hit and miss; although I've got Race Face evolve x-type cranks, evolve bar, stem and seatpost and not had so much as a wimper out of them (and i'm no xc whippet!)
Well is people stick to cheaper heavier stuff, its ofcourse stronger :)

Only been out for 3 or 4 rides on it, we'll see how it fares longer term, not slipped yet, but the coating is wearing off already from seat adjustment.

I think RF stuff is over rated personally. Thomson seatposts/stems are far higher quality, similar weights. Their ISIS B/Bs were really shite, their X-Type ones don't seem much better, their headsets were crap and stupidly expensive, their chainsets are harder to fit than HT2 and poorly designed.

IMO of course.

that'll be most of my bike then : /
All the counts Dan, is that it works for you.

My bike hasn't got a brand specific, just what ever was cheap and on special off at the time :)

Been using one of these Deus posts for about 6 months. Like David say, ease of adjustability was what attracted me to it.
Have had three big stacks on it too and it's still straight which is impressive for a lightweight post.

And the reason I bought a Deus post? Because I've snapped two Thomson 'far higher quality' posts and vowed never to waste my money on another.

That's impressive, I've never known anyone snap 1 Thomson, let alone 2!

I know of at least 2 where the glue has come away, mine included. There are thousands out there so it may be an isolated batch fault on an early product.

Mine started creaking on the second ride and took about 3 weeks before it came away completly. I weigh 63 kg so I know my mass was not to blame and it was never crashed.

It was replaced without question. I sold the new one before it looked used and bought a Thompson (Which I trust) so I can't comment on the replacment.

One other thing worth noting is that the seat rail clamps are quite wide so it is not suited for use on narrow saddles if you set them well back, anything infront of half way along the rails on something like a Fizik Gobi and your legs will rub on the clamps.
