I may be geeking out here, but I think that this might be the coolest thing EVER.

Sounds like a lot of cables to get wet / disconnected / go wrong. Kudos if it works though.
my fingers are very firmly crossed for it to work guess there's no excuse if i get lost though, with all this technology and all wish me (and the lucky comp winners) luck :)

It's a surprisingly tidy setup, really:
Get someone to watch the map and phone you if you start straying
look at the size of that bleeding saddle bag!
There's also a WAP page you can go to that reports where the tracker currently is - so if you get lost you can just whip out your phone, and look up where you are!
Is it just me or is the example map showing him doing 80-90mph?
Well best of luck for the ride!
it's a very accruate simulation of my ride black heart billy
So it'll be more like 70 minutes than 7 hours, then?
That saddle bag is only half-full, Dave - the tracker is in the lower compartment, there's space to shove a couple of spare tubes and a minitool in the upper compartment.

Thi is very similar to what I am currently testing with Viewranger & Facebook. There's a tab on my facebook site which has a load of photos tagged to the gps location where I took them. Then there's another tab which will display my current location (if I want it to!) on a Microsoft Live map. This uses the 'buddy beacon' feature in Viewranger that allows you to have mates' locations showen on your own map, if they have Viewranger too. Then I just run the phone on me stem like this: Bikes & gadgets, it's getting there! All I need now is to build a decent dynamo hub wheel and I can be totally self-sufficent. Good luck David, I'm sure you'll ride faster anyway if you think the world may be watching

.JPG) I'm with Mike that is just about the coolest thing ever... can I get a loan for my SDWx2 attempt please? cool-as, I gotta get me one!!!! Rob www.extreme-endurance.com
I think it may become obligatory for SDW2 runs from now on
Rob, you're more than welcome to use it! (an offer extended to anyone serious about the SDWx2). At present it's too hacky to rely on totally, but the killer feature from the support point of view is that anyone with a cellphone and the right link will know exactly where you are (downside is 500g extra weight on the bike, upside is you can run the GPS with backlight on all night). Plus, it's *very* motivating knowing there are people watching! Should even be able to receive text messages on the handlebar display - probably a feature best limited to the support crew though!

Ok, it's live now! (if it still says "simulation" beneath the map, do a reload or shift-reload). The tracker is about to be transported to Eastbourne by motorbike, so for the next hour or so the position may or may not make sense! The actual event starts around 18:00, looking forward to it! I'll keep the forum updated as events unfold.

very very cool indeed. Hopefully this becomes the future for team races especially 24hours races. As these event get bigger and bigger each year it should be relativley easy for an organiser to get a telecommunications company to proved a wireless access point over the campsite, which will allow you to track you team mates via live signal around the course because the use of 2-way radios when up to another 1000 people are trying to use them can be frustrating.
