Merida seem to be on good terms with the Rain God this year. They've had very little luck with the weather

Luckily both the Dyfi and the Rough Ride were blessed with good weather. I wonder how the Brecon Beast will fare this year?

Considering the rain they had before and during the weekend, the course held up well.

It was our first time in Selkirk. Even though it is a long drive, it was worth it.

For personal reasons I found Selkirk tougher than Dyfi this year.

What personal reasons are those?

The most obvious: Lack of training compared to the Dyfi. Contributing ones: First time ever I run out gels and water.

For me training never seems to be enough. I can do 35 miles plus in Peak (my local), be on my bike for 6 hours odd and not feel too bad when I get back,  but whenever I do Meridas I just dont seem to be prepared for the climbs!

Do they just pick the biggest in the country?

I dont really have any GPS gadgets, perhaps I should be concentrating on teh amount of ascent rather than the distance.

Suggestions?

Hills, hills and more hills. Then do them all again.

I think the main difference is that you know your local hills. Hence you know how far you can push yourself on certain climbs; riding and recovering on them becomes second nature.

However, if you do an event you don't know what is coming up - so these ascents will always feel harder than you local hills.

At least you have some "local" hills!
