watcha dudes,

thinking of getting some Cateye Stadiums. They must be bright enough (80w???), but does anyone have any experience with regards to spread of beam and battery life.
Do ya think I'd be better off with a multi light set e.g. 15w narrow + 10w wide + 10w helmet light.

cheers for any info

They last about 3 hours if you keep it on constantly, but that drops a bit if you keep switching it on and off. It takes quite a bit of power to get it started!

A 15x10x10 would be more than enough though.

I don't want your love in a dark forest though, thank you!

stadiums overpriced and overkill. Ive been night riding for 4 years with a single 15W helmet mounted Niterider, and its been good enough for everything as it throws a tight, bright spot just where you need it (ie. where youre looking, not where your bars happen to be pointing).

If you need 80W to nite ride, stick to day riding...Maybe its just me that thinks minimalism is the way, but if you want to EXPERIENCE the joy of nite riding, rather than merely extend your riding hours now its dark early, there IS such a thing as too much light.

If you must have lots of light the ideal set up is a flood on the bars and a spot on the helmet. The one disadvantage of just running a helmet lite is that as the beams travel on an essentially parallel path out and back you dont get shadows and so you lose depth perception. You adjust pretty easily tho.

The only thing worse than riding with someone with a Stadium is riding with someone who insists on running a rear flashing LED on the trails. Thankfully even the Red Bull 24hr commentators and organisers figured this and told people to turn em off.

Hmm bit of a rant there, think I need a coffee!

I dunno about the LED, if you're riding in forest at night and get seperated from people they're damn useful.

They're also quite a good idea on group night rides if you don't want to run into the back of people who have stopped in front of you/dismounted/fallen off.

People running red lights on trails rearly pisses me off. Especially those ultra bright ones. NO NEED.

As for group ridin I turn mine on when I stop to regroup.

Perhaps when riding in a forest at night with several hundred other people, 84W is a bit of an overkill. Perhaps bothering at all with lights is overkill when there's a big enough group of you?
Riding alone or with 2 people 84W isn't overkill. The beam isn't so much brighter - just a lot wider, so you don't have to faff around with aiming and focussing and the like - they're just so broad a beam.
The batteries last OK as they are NiMH and they now come with a smart charger.
The best lights at an astronomical price!
You also don't really need a helmet mounted light with a stadium.

If you want the real night riding experience why not a halfords nite-rider set on your bars. Or just eat lots of carrots?
