 lots of racers saying avoid
overpriced, over hyped and overweight, unreliable to boot
get yerself some hope pro2's built onto some 717s with some sapim cx-rays if you're after a decent lightweight wheelset
if you want uber light, tune and dt swiss do some stupid light hubs, also, stans olympic rims
check it all out

There have been a few issues reported of spokes coming adrift on the SLR's. The SL's were OK though so you may want to save a bit and go for those or as Mike says get something custom built. Chris King, DT revolution and 717 (or 819 if you want UST) would be my choice.

Hope Pro 2 with DT 4.2 and the Sapim Cx-ray.
But ... BACKING UP A BIT..
What type of riding are you doing?
Racing?

I sort of assumed that as he was looking at SLR's then he would be racing on them.

Or bunny hopping off of kirbs and pulling wheelies to woo the laydeees?

Yeah, don't waste your money on SLRs, if you really must have Crossmax, get some SLs.
Otherwise build some! I've had some Kings on XC717s with CX-Rays for 2 years, which have been near faultless, I've now got some Tune on Stans Olympics with CX-Rays, which are a bit more flexy, but a lot lighter, and I'm expecting less durable.
Either option is cheaper than SLRs, significantly lighter, easier to maintain etc etc.

Dear all
Thanks for the advice, I ride forest trail and fast cross country. I am really a roady who mountain bikes if that makes sense. I don't do big jumps etc and I like climbing so the weight is an issue. The main prob with the standard NRS Composite is the weight of the rear wheel unbalances the bike as the cheap wheels and back sprocket spoil a very light and responsive frame. I have just ridden an Elsworth Truth and I like the lack of weight but not the softness of the ride and the frame.
In short I want light, reliable and I only need a 2.1 tyre width.
The SLR's have gone away as I was outbid on Ebay last night I think they are worth $750 but not £550.
Thanks

 THESE are still a bargain.

Yes relatively speaking but my back shock has just died so that is another £300 for a Fox RP23.
Mavic CrossMax ST Mountain Bike weigh in at 1700grm the pair, any good as alternative to SLR's

Second Kings on XM819 rim-bomb-proof and light. Also could try some hope hoops-DT rims laced to Pro2 hubs. Just got a set of them using the 5.1D rim, but you could go for the lighter version.

Which shock is dead? I had mine serviced, repaired & PUSHed at TF Tuned for £125 rather than replace it for £300.
Rides better now than when new.

While we on the topic of wheels, what would be a good budget wheel set for my GF? Thats reasonably light but durable, she has already managed to buckle her front wheel.

Its a standard OE Giant NRS none branded shock. The bike used the Giant NRS pedal system so the Fox Pro-pedal seems a good option. Giant have advised on the model direct.

 frichie, xt on 719?

If you want sommat light, don't buy Crossmax, in any guise, 1700g is pretty damn heavy.
I'd go to AW Cycles in Caversham, Pedal On in Tadley, or Mountain Trax in Wokingham (bit further away), and see what they've got to offer.
You know with the NRS you have to get the special Fox shock? Because they run no sag (IIRC), you can't use any shock, it has to be a specific NRS one.

Nick
I usually go to AW they suggested the SLR's but have found them a bit pricey. Mavic quoted the wheelset at 1720grms inc qr etc, I would like to go lighter.
The Fox RP23 is suggested by Giant and AW to suit the NRS system. I am watching a PUSH RP23 on Ebay
I would like a mountain bike shop with the hardware in stock to have a play with and not have to order it on spec.
Back to the wheels any suggestions
Thanks
