Safe way to wash?

Just used my new Gill Pro Speed in the rain and mud today - boy it works well - no boil in the back effect!

 I got back filthy so hand washed it with no detergent to be safe - instruction symbols say hand wash 30 degrees, and tumble dry only - fair does - but can/should I use detergent or will it strip out the proofing agent?

 Any ideas - none in the info pack it came with?

 Also - in time I assume it will need reproofing - again no info on this - what is the best way if required? Graingers 2 in 1 - this only references GoreTex

 Again - any ideas please?

I've an eVent jacket and wash it at 40 deg on a synthetic cycle with Nik-Wax Tech Wash then drip dry or tumble on low heat. Been fine for the last 2 years.

You might need to replenish the DWR sometimes but Grangers or TX-Direct wash-in from Nik-Wax do the trick. I do mine about every 6 or so washes.

Allegedley this is what to do - use NikWax Tech Wash first, then NikWax T.X Direct.

 Reproof with TX Direct every 6 or so washes

Some tips for washing and reproofing. The most important is to get rid of any normal detergent in your washing machine.

  • Wash the detergent drawer with boiling water.
  • Put two clean towels through a hot rinse, twice.
  • Place upto two garments in your machine and then add the Tech Wash as per instructions.
  • Drip dry.
  • Wash garments in Nikwax T.X Direct
  • Drip dry.

    Does eVent care differ depending on manufacturer?

    According to the Endura label I'm supposed to:

    Machine wash warm with liquid detergent (I've always used Nikwax anyway)

    Rinse twice. Hang dry.

    Steam iron warm to rejuvenate water repellent finish.

    I've not seen that method offered before, I've always been lead to believe it was best to tumble dry ???

    I've heard that ironing eVent can replenish the DWR, but I think you need to be very careful as to how hot the iron is.  I decided not to risk it.
