yesterday I was with a group of walkers from work and we took off to walk up Helvelyn. All suitably dressed and kitted out we set off and Climbed over Striding Edge (I didn't look down!) and reached the summit in a steady time. We then began to descent and cleared the tough bit and were only about 2km from the mines at Greenside.
This was the point where the most experienced walker/climber 'slipped' on some stones. Down she went like a sack of spuds and landed badly on her ankle.
Scream of pain, white as a sheet and feeling sick due to the pain made me realise she wasn't faking it. This meant I had to put my achey knee aside and having wrapped her in a silver foil blanket, leave her with one of the group whilst 2 of us ran to YHA to raise the alarm.
A quick 999 call raised the Mountain Rescue team who all assembled at our RV point within 45 minutes. Off they all went, quickly made to her location and havin gpumped her full of morphine managed to stretcher her down and shipped her off to Carlise A & E where she was confirmed as having snapped her ankle in two places.
Her pain was such that without mountain rescue we really would have struggled to get her down the mountain to safety, and for that I say a great big thankyou.
Its run on a volunteer basis, something that will be sending a bumper cheque of to in the morning.
BTW, since I arrived back in the UK earlier today, it's very cold and damp and my poorly fingers are hurting. Arry you shall be hearing from my legal team.
After an incident with my wife on Tryfan, I'm a regular contributor to Ogwen valley MRT.
I think if we use an area for recreation regularly, we should at least contribute a little of our bike upgrade fund to these top guys and gals who really earn and need the cash.
My 2nd ever climb on Snowdon ( trying to get up Grib Goch ( sp! ) ) we decided to find a route down ( me + 1 mate his first time ), as it was wet and cloudy, mate slipping on some grass then bounce over a boulder field badly, battering himself up pretty badly, i carried him down the path thankfully not 50ft away, within mins 1 of the rescue team was on the path and in no time the entire team showed, carried him down to the miners track and land rovered him back to my car, then off to hospital, damn sterling job!!
I've assisted them a few times :-
Saw the guys looking for 2 walkers on the Glyders, I by chance found them and escorted them down.
I got to the Car park at Snowdon after doing my climb, they where assembling a search team 2 girls missing well over due, so i went up on my own and actually found them, they made a classic mistake I once made went to high on the pig track got scared and froze, gales and torentual rain.
On the way down after that I rescues this couples kid that ( 6 ish year old ) that got blown off the side, they didn't even realise and escorted them back to the car.
I've also seen them, get the body of a girl of grib gogh she fell down the steep side sadly killed her About 200metres infront of me not nice!!! Haven't climbed the Grib since!! ( didn't hang around regular Motorway at the time )
And Tower Ridge, tower gap I was climbing up it Solo, a pair roped up ahead had a accident, the lower person fell on tower Gap, but not badly, pulled the person above into tower gap, he died while they where there trying to get him out.
Tough job, damn good service normally in hellish conditions and sadly alot of unhappy endings
I notice that wherever Arry goes, accidents happen, a jinx maybe?
As a police officer we cant offer you a bribe not to come to cannock, but perhaps we could all chip in a TENNER for the mountain rescue, or air ambulance, we may never need it, but its a good cause.
And if ARRYS there we made need both, can a helicopter land in a forest!
Plenty of clearings in the chase where they can Land, I think they had to do that on 1 ride ages back, a ride I wasn't on, my Wednesday night riders had the copter out years back to only 1 place in the wyre forest where they can land a helicopter to.
FCUK ME! - forget about the luck I bring along, I'm more worried about spending the day with Dylan and the high posibility that one of us may fall of something high!
