Julie if you want a physio then Jon put me onto a very good one a while back. Any injuries I get, i go to see her and every time she has been able to fix me.
My FSA Platinum Titanium ISIS Bottom Bracket lasted 6 months in the Peaks but those nice people at CRC replaced it under warranty. I couldn't believe how small the bearings were in them.
On Jon's advice I have an SKF ready and waiting to replace it when it next goes.
I know what you mean Steve - its great to watch Britain actually being really, really good at something. Watching the individual sprint qualifying today was amazing - looking good for a few more medals there.
On the downside, I was looking to do my Track Skills session at the velodrome, but am guessing that the next one they run will be massively oversubscribed, as everyone will be all fired up from watching the GB team! I'll check tomorrow.
Anyone else get out today? Ros and I went for a wee pootle with a friend over from Wales, around Rowarth/Mellor area. The bridleway above Aspenshaw Hall is completely FUBAR'd after all the rain! Its normally just a steady climb, but the main line is now a deep channel about 18" deep and about 12" across with some big holes. You'll be doing extremely well to clean it now, although once it dries out a bit, the descent will be a lot more interesting!
I was suitably also "quite tired" when I got home. Nothing that an hour snoozing in the bath didnt help solve tho - try not to visualise that please Think of all the good that ride will do you - I know it will do me lots - just what I needed after 2+ weeks of relatively slow MTB riding.
That's bridleway's got worse and worse over the years, so I'm not really surprised it's died a death in the rain. Must go and take a look some time soon.
I was up and around Hayfield yesterday for a few hours and there's some serious rain wash damage - the right fork as you come down the Coldwell Clough descent at the bottom, the one you take if you want to head up towards Jacob's from there now ends in a quite scary rubble garden that I don't remember being quite that bad before, for example...
ok guys, maintenance issue for you to try and help with:
Its on my SS which uses a standard geared frame with a chain tensioner.
first of all, how much chain stretch is too much? I dont have a chain checker but i do have a tape measure and i know that 12 links should be 12 inches but mine is now 12 and 1/16th inches. Is that too much?
My reason for asking is i have an odd noise that i am trying to diagnose. The best way i can describe noise is its 'bubbly' noise. Its only there when i pedal. I initially thought it was the BB which was fooked a long time ago so have replaced that but the noise is still there. The chainline looks good to me and it didnt used to make that noise and i havent touched the position of anything that could affect it. It could be the freehub which probably needs me to open it up and have a look clean etc but i wouldnt have thought it would make a noise when pedalling forwards. backwards possibly, but not forwards as surely its sort of like locked into position innit? its not the pedals as i have had it on a stand and 'pedaled' using just the crank arms.
Any tips would be good.
maybe i should just give up on biking, it takes too much effort to keep things running smoothly.
Get a Park Tool chain checker if you're worried about stretch, but your chain is on the way out anywaym, though it's less crucial with ss I think. The noise could just be the chain riding up over the chain ring or cog or even the tensioner thingee, maybe. How's your chain line?
I'd fit a new chain rather than giving up on biking. Eight speed ones work fine for me btw If it stillmakes a noise then investigate further?
on the funny noise front - how old is the sprocket? if there are noticeable wear marks the chain will make a funny noise as it moves over the worn teeth. Try turning it around.
Or the chainring... I always turn the chainring round to get double life out of it.
Singlespeeds aren't very sensitive to chain wear, fortunately , although I've never used a chain tensioner. If you change your chain, use an 8 speed one and don't bother with a track/BMX/singlespeed one. They are heavier for no discernable benefit.
