I am thinking of doing an off-road coast to coast ride for charity next year. Does anyone know if it is feasible to do this in 24 hours? If so, where can i find a suitable route? I will need regular access to a support team, so any route that crosses roads regularly would be great. Any hints anyone can give me or books to look at etc. please let me know.

Official off-road C2C route & guide:

http://www.mbruk.co.uk/mbruk_coast.html

210 miles I think. Usually people take 5 days or so. Although there was an article in Singletrackworld magazine where someone tried it in 24hrs - but failed.

Also worth a look.

Plus do a search on this forum for previous threads discussing this:

As I recall the original Walkers (Wainwrights) coast to coast was around 200 miles...I really should know, I walked it a few years back, 210 does sound familiar.

The Cyclists c2c is a touch shorter...there are variations between 150 and 190 miles as I recall.

As for doing it in a day. Yes, you simply have to be well-prepared, start early and simply accept that it's going to hurt lots.

As for all off road...I think you may struggle to never go on Tarmac but you should be able to string something together of mostly off road.

200 miles coast to coast St Bees - Robin Hoods Bay.

Carlisle - Newcastle is only 58 miles by road, neither is exactly far from the coast, surely something doable in that neck of the woods?

I did the Wainwright inspired Coast to Coast. There is a guide written by (I think) Tim Witherspoon or something like that. Frankly it is grueling to do it in four days so if you can do it in one I would be very impressed.. Remember it goes over the Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes...

Have a look at this web site, http://www.offroadadventures-online.co.uk/
There is an article on doing the coast to coast-in 24 Hours, single day epics. I think this is the C2C Cycle route not the Coast to coast official off road route. It uses both road and off road sections ideal for a supported ride. Let me know how you get on, thinking of doing something similar myself.

Sunderland to Gretna probably be the shortest route, this has got me thinking, I want to do something for Kosovo and that sounds like a good idea.

Maybe we could join you.

Lard - you're thinking of Tim Woodcock. His book suggests doing it in 8 days... took us 5.

Done the Sustrans "C2C" easily in 3 days, so 2 days wouldn't be too bad and 1 day possible if you're superfit!

I seem to recall Coast to Coast being 210miles and the C2C 140miles.

...forgot to mention - the C2C isn't off road. Wouldn't want do it on a road bike but mainly its B roads and purpose built cycle tracks.

Sustrans C2C is doable in 24 hours. At least, I believe that it has been done and even if it hasn't, 140 miles in 24 hours on good surfaces ought not to present too many problems.

The Woodcock Coast-to-Coast is a great week's riding, but forget it for a 24 hour attempt.

C2C has been done many times in 24h. I believe the record, (unofficial) stands at something like 11h50m, or something daft like that.

Hi

I work for Sustrans, in the Newcastle (upon Tyne) office. The Sea2Sea (as it is officially known) is 140 Miles form Whitehaven, or Workington, to Sunderland or Newcastle.
As mentioned above the route is a mixture of quiet roads and well surfaced raliway paths.
I believe the record for completing it is under 10hrs, though I don't think there is anything official.

If you're interested in the route take a look at Dik Stoddart's site (www.c2c-guide.co.uk), as this has all the info you could ever need.

Good luck.

:)

There's a wee C-to-C up here in Scotland which should be do-able in 24 hours and has a couple of road sections to meet up with support. You've probably noticed it already on offroad adventures:
