Upgrading my race hardtail to disc breaks and losing the xtr sti's. Was wondering if there is much difference in build quality or smooth shifting? would i notice a downgrading if i went for xt's for value??
I've got the SRAM rockets and they're excellent shifters.. And less of a waste of money that the XTRs... Just think of what you could put the left over cash towards... :)
Which XTR shifters are you on about? Rapid Fire or Dual Control? If the RF are they with a mech that shifts in the opposite direction to the 'normal' rear mechs (can't remember what the S term for it is?)
I've got SRAM X0 shifters and mech and they work brilliantly (also X9 shifters which I had previously). I have used SRAM gripshift too in the past and also liked it. I have also had SRAM rocket twist shift and an XT rear mech and didn't get on with it at all. The gear changing felt sluggish and never very accurate. Not sure if the trigger shifters work any better but I don't think SRAM and Shimano mechs/shifters work particularly well together even if the Rocket is supposed to be S compatible.
think youre on about rapid rise??? heard nothing but evils about them! would be the normal rapid fire ones if thats what i gofor. heard a lot of good about sram though so thinkin i may have a dabble in that!
SRAM Attacks are Lovely, I use them long lasting too, Rockets are the version up with same Shimano compatible pull ratio, so should be slightly 1% better :)
Rapid Rise is great if you're new to the sport as it's more logical (same button on either side make pedalling easier/harder) but a lot of people that are used to 'conventional' shifting don't like it because change is evil.
What I was trying to say was that SRAM mech and shifters=good shifting, Shimano mech and shifters=good shifting, SRAM shifters and Shimano mech=OK shifting but not as good as with the previous two options. As for which you go for depends entirely on what system of shifting you like.
I personally think it's all Bollox and in the mind, the SRAM to SRAM should be effected Less by mud, but you need X7 or above for the different pull ratio.
It's just changing gears, do you really do it that much ??
