To me I think it might ruin some of the singletrack, to be lugging camping gear. I can't see getting a pack weight for this length of route, suitable for the alps, down to less than 15 kilos. That's quite a lot of weight to be carrying up hill, and will have quite a large effect on the bikes handling, and the brakes, going downhill.

That's why I am looking at something more organised, where overnight gear is transported for you. Although I also like the idea of some self sufficient trips in the alps and Pyrenees. I think I will go on the organised trip next year. And with that experience, see what I think is possible in the future

Yeah, sounds like a plan.
Misty - I have an article from singletrack, on some guys who did the GR5 carrying their own gear, if you pm me your email, I will send it you.

Monkey, could you send that article to me also please.

Thanks.

That would be great - PM'd you. Ta.
Interesting article. I have friends living near Chamonix so it's got me thinking about the possibility of riding the GR5 from Lake Geneva to their place. Roll on next summer and freedom from studies!
Plenty of bike-shouldering in prospect by the looks of it. Now that's proper mtb!
Yes, but they where splitting kit between 2, I am going to do some experimenting over the coming months to see what I can get my kit weight down to.

Not worked much over last 8 wks, TBH. Oh, apart from me stint @ Br*df*rd (shudders).

On nights tonight, brought in the beckoning silence DVD, so hopefully get a chance to watch that.

Then off for two weeks and back to blighty, looking forward to having a bacon butty, how I miss some of the basic pleasures.

Worked last night rode home at 1/2 past midnight. It was nice and quite funny no other cyclists about.
Working again this evening till same time

What do you do XCman?

I've not been on here for ages (and shouldn't be on here now really) as my new job means I've lost my rather profitable weekend over-time

Grumpf.

Work for a train company, currently at home having my tea and being paid

But have to go back in 30 minutes to get a Taxi to pick up my next Train.

*forlorn wave* Here 'til 20.00

*waves back*

It could be worse you could be not working like me and suffering with Man Flu. just woke up with a raging sore throat.

This could well be my last working weekend for while. Rarely had a completely work-free weekend in the last 4 years - the end is in sight!
Still having to work, wifes car needed cleaning as its up for sale. Anyone want an old Volvo ?
