I'm thinking of going to clipless from flats as I'm fed up shredding my shins every few rides if I slip a pedal or come off the bike (as is usually the case)
I've been looking at going for either Time ATAC XS's or Shimano XT's, I would like to have a fair amount of movement so that I get a feeling similar to the flats.
Anyone got any advice on these or suggestions of other types of clipless pedals to look at.
I've been using some 30 quid Shimano's for the last 2-3 years. They work prefectly in all conditions and i think i've only ever had a slight problem engaging when i was on a trail so muddy i had to walk most of the way. My bike was just a brown lump so the pedal and shoe were just saturated with mud. They clipped in with a bit of force though.
My knees and elbows called time on clipping in. I went back to flats and punctured shins and am back to riding most things and not chickening out, as i eventually ended up doing when clipped in.
I always found it amazing, how when spinning out on a muddy climb, that my knee or elbow would find the only bloody rock for miles. Now I just shred my shins......sorted
I too sacrifice my shins ( actually never a issue until I went to Bear Traps legs are ripped to shreds but the grip is so good I'm sticking with them ), sticking to Flats, alot of my mates went SPD recently then quickly first wet slimey ride decided Flats is more sensible and went back to flats.
After 1 or 2 bad stuck to bike crashes I'll add.
Stick to flats, spend less time in hospital and un able to ride is my view!!
Crank Brother's Mallet C's would be a good compromise if coming from flats. £60 from LBS or can be picked up for £40 - £45 new on Ebay. Plenty of float so feel very much like a normal flat pedal but should save your shins by keeping your feet attached when they need to be. They also weight the same as popular flatties such as DMR V8/V12's, Shimano DX's etc.
If you want a looser feel to start ask for the multi-release cleats, this makes getting out of the pedals much easier to, especially good for dabs and crashes.
When starting out, make sure the tension is nice and loose for the first couple of rides then wind in until your comftable.
I'd suggest half an hour riding round in circles on some flat grass clipping in and out, then go off for a non technical spin before hitting anything too challenging.
I agree with Stevey, get some cheapy M520's. I did it a couple of years ago thinking if i liked it i could upgrade, but tbh 2 years on i'm still using them cos they work great and improved my riding no end.
Become one with your bike & get clipped in.For the first couple of weeks you'll have a few comedy falls when you forget about them but after that you will wonder how you ever rode without 'em.
BTW after many years shimano's I switched to eggbeaters last year & find them much easier to clip in 'n out of,with a nice amount of float too.
Been using Smimanos all my life and wondered about the Time's I've heard the bio mechanins of Atac's are better for your knees.
I found that once you get used to them and get them in the right position, you can DH anything. I find that a nice side ways action will unclip the shoe so i can dab down. I still have my old flats, all copper greased up and I might try them one weekend for a larf.
