I'm looking to have a second set of wheel for my bike and wanted some advice before I buy. I am going to get some custom wheels done, so I can combine which ever rim, spoke, hub setup I want. The reason for this new set, is so I can have specific wheels for DH stuff, jumps etc. My current set I will use mostly for std pottering about on, bit of XC etc
I want them pretty much bullet proof and not too fussed about weight. I don't think a few extra grams will make much difference for what I'll use it for anyway.
I have a Kona Coiler Deluxe and its running the std 321 rims and Shimano hubs at the mo. Never had any probs from them and after a couple of years they are still going strong.
The setup I'm looking at, is as follows. If you have any better suggestions let me know (Ideally I want gold, yellow, orange rims to jazz things up a bit)
Budget, somewhere in the region of £300-400???
2 x 26" HALO SAS GOLD MTB rims with 36 hole
HALO Black Stainless Steel spokes with black nipples
Hope Pro 2 front hub in Gold - QR
Hope Pro 2 Rear hub in Gold (9 speed cassette) - QR
Set of Hope QR skewers in Gold
New Shimano XTR 9 speed cassette (for ease of wheel changes)
I looked at the Chris Kings, but they are mucho dosh and probably a bit good for my riding capability.
Its looking like the DT 5.1D's are being suggested by everyone and the Hope Pro II hubs come in a selection of colours. This combo is available as a wheelset as well having looked around.
As for colour choice, I'm just bored of black. My entire bike is black and needs an injection of colour...
To be honest the Hope/DT 'hope hoops' wheelset (hubs and rims in black) is not that much cheaper than a spangly, custom, colourful-hubbed set from Merlin...
819's are a good alternative, agreed. The 5.1's are slightly wider so I guess it depends on what sort of tyres you'll use/ type of riding you're into..
I'm okay with my Hope XC/717s at the moment. However, I am thinking of going tubeless but I still haven't got a clue what to get. I saw the movie clips on the stans website and like the idea of stans rims because of the Air Burping issue. At the same time, however, some people have told me stans rims aren't robust (the Olympic ones I guess). I see they do some wider stonger ones called Arch which are still quite light. Ah well....I'm still chewing it over. Best of luck choosing yours.
