Sorry xc man - i did mean to ask if you were ok?! What did the gate - closer say?
He was very apologetic, not much you can do about it really, good job we were only doing about 15mph had we been doing full speed with the gate fastened open it would have been about 45 mph.
I get the impression I may ache in the morning

Why is it always xcman having accidents, must be the most accident prone rider ever.

Would he be safe to ride with?

Could it be that he is just a crap rider, and likely to take everyone down with him in a fiery ball of death?

Or does he suck up all the bad mojo? leaving everyone else to push the limits without fear.

Back to the original question:

About 3 years ago I went over the bars and landed on my head when I wasn't wearing my helment. The result was an awful lot of blood, an ambulance ride, and 15 stitches in my scalp. I looked a mess for several weeks and I was probably lucky.

More recently (4 months ago) I hit a very muddy depression at speed and my front wheel stopped. I summersaulted and landed on my head. This time I was wearing in helmet and I cracked in half (not my head). I was back on the bike in a few minutes - just a little bruised and shaken up.

WEAR   A    HELMET!!!

Always wear a helmet.  Its not the high speed crashes that scare me but the slow one that i am not expecting.  I never seem to bang my helmet as i seem to have a knack of falling off 'properly' so when it does happen it will be when i am unawares.

In a similar story to the OP i had one of my riding buddies let go of a gate once whilst i was going hell for leather through it side by side with another pal.  I had nowhere to go and hit the gate with my hand on the handlebar.  It broke my thumb (I raised my fingers out of the way knowing i was gonna be hit).  That wasnt a very pleasant experience and he got effed at something chronic

My 'best' helmet experience was last year, riding home.

I was just about to turn into where i lived, but a van pushed me over the central reservation of the (half arsed) dual carriageway, i landed pretty much on the top of my head, and you can see where the helmet was crushed and damaged, a normal helmet would've undoubtedly broken, but my Decibel (carbon reinforced) held strong.

I came away from that crash with a concussion, but nothing else (on my head anyway) and i'm glad i wore it.

To turn the question around a little bit can somebody come up with a good reason for not wearing a helmet ?

I'd rather 'helmet hair' than this:

Too true Nobby. I was only joking. A helmet has saved my life twice according to the doctors who treated me. Both times caused by dumb London motorists when I was a bike messenger.

Didn't take you seriously although that's impressive HH there!  A close rival to Sprokitt @ Woburn - who had that photo?

I've smashed 2 & hate to think of the consequenses if I'd not been wearing 'em.
