Planning? Don't think so. This may or may not be why I was totally lost for 45 mins last night at Woburn!

The only time I've been lost on a mtb was at Woburn - and I was using a gps! #before anyone else mentions it #

Memory Map on the 'puter - I love the profile option - if it looks too hilly, I can find another route!

I leave a trail of sweets. I have a girth that suggests I'd quickly turn back and start eating if I tried that method!

Lots of great tips to choose from there! If you want a boring answer... if I'm going somewhere i've not been before I tend to use a combination of OSmaps and www.mapmyride . If you can figure out a rouge route on the OSmap you can then map it on mapmyride and it will tell you how far it is and can also tell you the profile of the ride, metres climbed and all that. There are some good route guide books about too, but they tend to focus on areas where there is exceptional ride to be riden.

I've turned into a bit of a Memory-Map geek - I love paper maps, but it's nice to just keep going without having to get another one off the shelf For trailfinding in patches of woodland I tend to just turn a GPS on, randomly explore every trail I can see and then look at the wiggly line later to make sense of it all.
