Spokes snapping at the thread

Snapped a lot of spokes on my rear wheel last week at morzine, no real surprise, I'm a heavy lad and the riding is pretty rough. What did surprise me was that most snapped at the thread.

could this be a sign of a badly built wheel?

Yeah, I'd get it entirely rebuilt personally.
Yeh I am going to rebuild it, just curious as to why the spokes snapped where they did.

To be honest I can't answer that one.  I've never learnt the black art that is wheelbuilding.

I kept on snapping (well I say I, but I'm sure it wasn't me at fault) the spokes at the hub end of one of my wheels.  I had the spokes replaced, and then after a few had failed I had the wheel rebuilt.  Where it happened again.

I bought new wheels in the end, but I wanted new wheels anyways.  The synergy rims that the bike came with were dreadful.

I think I will email that wheelpro guy I bought the wheel building book from, if I can find the email for the original purchase.

I have a book called `The Bicycle Wheel` saved as a PDF.  Drop me a message with your email addie if you'd like me to mail it on.

Wheel building is no 'black art' just something you need to take a methodical approach to.  Your snapped spokes are certainly a result of poor building, incorrect tension or the builder failed to lube the threads.  You bought them from 'wheelpro' as in Roger whatever his name is?  He used to bang his own drum quite a lot, but you never seemed to hear anyone else joining in

I think he bought the book from him, not the wheels Mike. I've got the same book and it is pretty good, he seems a bit geeky about wheelbuilding which is a good thing IMO. As for the spokes snaping where they did, I dunno. They can snap at the elbow if they've not been lined up on the outside flange, pushed in towards the rim. I dont know why they'd go at the nipple end of the spoke, maybe not backing off a little at final tensioning and the spoke being left twisted!?

Totally agree! That and a little patience.

Yep, you often get that if the theads aren't lubed.

I wouldn't expect a man of your standing to build ones own wheels anyway. Surely you have a handyman around for such menial tasks.

I find the spokes need backing off a little even though I oil the spoke threads and the rim eyelets.

Indeed I have! A tame roadie who has found the joy of mtb in singlespeeding!! Builds a VERY good wheel, I'll tell you.

Ihave now broken three spokes on my DT swiss rear wheel.  I've been riding it for 18months and also had to replace the hub during that time.  I won't be buying DT Swiss in future!

Oi!....... I resemble that remark!

I snapped a couple of spokes in Morzine a year or two back. Mine was down to the fact that my nipples had corroded and no longer held the spoke into the rim.

What happened to the hub Paul? I ask 'cause I've a couple of DT rears and, so far, they've been fine. No broken spokes either.
