My Viper is five years old and feels strange sometimes. The bearings are OK and there are no cracks but now and then the rear wheel seems not to follow the front as it should. Anyhow, enough of trying to justify the unjustifiable, I'm looking at 100mm four bars, VPPs and Maestros.

Giant have put XT on their Anthem X1 for 2010 instead of the worst brakes (Avid), worst cranks (Raceface) worst drivetrain (X9) and lousy wheels. there's a SID on it too.

Look closer, the pivot's on the chainstay.  Titus or the original Helius?

I am surprised you are looking at a full bike John.  I had you down as a frame and build up kind of guy.

I'm looking at frames too Mister Bump but they all seem inordinately expensive compared to the complete bikes. I'll be getting a frame only for my son shortly (probably a Fizzbikes RCZ which are the ubiquitious equivalent of On-One over here but about half the weight and price) and will need a set of bits to build it so nothing will be wasted so long as it's XT.

I know what you mean.  I am struggling to build my GF a bike for less than I can buy one for.  The problem is the fork, aftermarket ones seem so expensive compared to buying a bike with a decent one already on it.

That Canyon looks right nice John.

The only reason I went frame only last time was because just about everything on my old bike was in good nick & transferable to the new frame.

I've seen one or two end of season bargains around but they're few & far between -  do you not get such deals over there?

The Canyon does Nobby but I feel €3000 should be enough hence the Anthem as the example of the sort of bike I'm looking at. Fahrrad.de often have end of season bargains but they seem to have sold everything I liked this year in my size (between 16" and 18" with a 565mmish top tube). Just about everything on the Viper is somewhere between worn and worn out so even if I don't use this bits on a bike for Sean a complete bike makes sense. Sometimes on threads like this someone posts a bargain they've spotted so it's worth a thread. Pity I don't like the carbon Trance on Paul's.

What kind of riding will it be for, will you be wanting to go off road and if so be able to climb well and would you be wanting it to perform well descending?

Maybe a hardtail would be more suited

I'm guessing the big chains like Evans & Leisure Lakes will have their sale stock online already so they may be worth a look.

THESE GUYS had a couple of Epics reduced t'other week but I can't remember owt else.

What about a good old Lapierre x-control John? It's VPP and Lapierre's are generally well specced.

That Anthem X1 was only £2200rrp when I demo'd one earlier this year!

But you are correct about buying a full bike though, I paid less for my carbon XTC than just the bits (without frame) would have cost.

The X-control is on my short list Stevey but I haven't found anything below full price (€2500) in my size, and I'd rather have a SID than a Fox. The Epic isn't Nobby even though that's a good deal because I like hardtails to be hardtails and suspension bikes to have suspension all the time.

The price has gone up a lot br but the spec is now more attractive. Not £500 more attractive though I admit. I sure I don't need anything more than my hardtails, an XTC composite and an old aluminium thing I use for hacking around with the club, but that red is a very nice colour.

I would also be looking at the UK for a bike being the pound is still prettyweak against the euro. Germany never seem to have end of year compete bike sales as far as I can tell (high street retailers anyway) as they never carry that much stock so if you want a bike you generally have to order it (my LBS tends to stock one example and size of each model and it's one of the biggest stores in Leipzig).
