Nah, it'll just look wrong. It's not like John's a lanky streak of piss or a real short arse, he should be able to buy a frame that fits AND looks right.

MBR and What MTB ratings aren't worth the paper they are printed on. MBR slagged off the X-control and gave it only 8/10 (IIRC)because its wheelbase is too short according to them. Now it might be 0.9% shorter than the bike they eulogised over but frankly they were clutching at a very short straw to slag off a bike that was clearly better equipped than the other bikes on test, and more sophisticated than any other than the Anthem.

I think I should too Mike S. Lots of bikes used to be available in roughly 43cm with a 120mm head tube, 70°/73° and 57cm TT. I know that manufacturers try to rationalise sizes to cut costs and make it easier for shops, and you can do a lot with seat posts and stems, but I'd still like a bike as near as possible to that size so it does look and feel right.

How does a 110mm head tube instead of a 120mm one equate to 3cm of stem spacers? /confused

 |
I've already got 2cm of stem spacers on all my bikes with 120mm head tubes. Another 1cm makes 3cm. My steel KHS DJ is a 15" that I sometimes use for XC (I've got a 14" jump bike too though it's lacking a fork ATM). I bent two seat posts before I bought a Thomson for it and even now I can feel something giving, no doubt the frame flexing due to the leverage of the long post. I normally ride it with the saddle down so it's not a problem but on a bike I'm buying for adventure racing I think a slightly longer seat tube would be better. 16"/41cm minimum as originally stated.

Yes I know Stevey. 70°/73°, 42cm, 575mm TT 122 head tube - just like my XTC that feels just right. The 9 would do at €3 499 though the Magura fork is unknown territory unlike the SID. €200 more than the Anthem. I'm now going round in circles now.

I'm now going round in circles now. That was inevitable, just buy a frame and build it up.

You know you want that Canyon really, don't you? Just bite the bullet and put your money where your mouth is.!

Indeed.
I appreciate that it's a shitty single pivot but you may find a small ASR-SLc fits the bill & there may even be a bargain around as the new 5" travel version is out now.

 Single pivot rules.

Single pivot rules. Not under braking though...

It's not an issue on the ASR.

Such a quaint, old fashioned point of view

Without some careful platform damping built into the shock, single pivot systems have no choice but to behave this way. It's more a question of whether you want the complexity in the shock where you can't easily service and must replace with exactly the same shock or you add the complexity to the frame with extra pivots. The way some single pivot designs are going though they seem to put pivots everywhere as well as using a platform shock. The good news is the behaviour under braking is mostly irrelevant to the overall feel of most bikes. It annoyed me slightly when I had to ride a Commencal for a week instead of my Trance, but single pivot vs. 4 bar wouldn't be the first thing I'd worry about when buying.

Is suppose if you run with enough air or pro-pedal to stop the suspension working brake jack is no longer an issue on single pivots. As stated a few pages earlier, I like suspension bikes to have suspension all the time - a quaint, old-fashioned view I know. Well I now have a longer short list thank you, I'm going to hijack some bikes to ride, especially some 18" bikes with short stems as nearly all the bikes on the thread have dropped top tubes and should feel smaller than they are. No bargains that leap off the page so far which suggests manufacturers and bike shops are doing pretty well, who said there was a recession?

When you only have 3" of suspension travel brake jack isn't an issue I can assure you.
