Not disputing your assertion Mike, but how can cycling for 12 hrs be harder than cycling for 24? Because you don't usually race pairs by riding for 12 hours straight and then letting someone else have a go. You ride for a couple of hours at a quicker pace (because you're only riding for a couple of hours)and then only have a couple of hours to recover. Killer. DK, once you've done a 24, go back to a 12, it seems like a sprint As for distances, the winners will be clocking around 250 miles. I've never managed more than 140. Which is odd, as I've managed 100 in 12 hours. The road bike record is over 550 miles, I think.

Sounds horrific.....riding round in fcuking circles all day and all night, not actually getting anywhere, not actually knowing who's in front, who's behind, who is riding solo, who is riding in pairs, who's riding in a team......and to top it all, having a tenderised arse and in total pain throughout! I can think of far more interesting things to do!

You either get it or you don't I guess

DK - Not sure what 24 me and the mates are doing next year,if its the same one as you we'd be happy to offer support in some way but unfortunately for you it will stop at the dirty pants bit,get used to riding long hours in skiddies. That would be good thanks, let me know your plans when you sort summat out.

When Tinker Juarez did a solo at Mayhem some years back, he came in top five overall on his first lap (including all the teams, pro riders etc). Maybe you should try that tactic, it worked for him.

Why not try as a team of two for your first event Because pairs is the hardest way to do a 24hr race. FACT.
I raced pairs at SITS this year. And 12-hour solo at 24/12. To be honest, the 12-hour solo was a lot more pleasant, racing pairs is a bit like racing team but without enough recovery. Even running double laps, by the time you've sorted out fluid, food, clean kit, sorted your bike etc, you're out there again and pace judgement is really hard. You have to go faster than you would soloing, but if you run at sprint pace, as you would in a team, you suffer a lot. Oh, and I was ninth at 24/12 and 12th at SITS so not exactly rapid, but comparable sort of performance at both. So... yes, pairs is quite brutal. I'd do it again though but I'm thinking a 24-hour solo maybe. And a return date with Kielder, where I crashed going well at 50 miles and broke my front brake That's a nasty event btw, if you like pain. And just to prove how incorrigibly stupid I am, we're racing pairs at Strahtpuffer in January. Hmmm...

 Ok so here's a question...
I came in at 27th ( A place I was extremely chuffed with, nay sayers) I hadn't trained much, and was doing 1:20 13km laps coming in with 12 (lurked the 12th should have been 13) laps overall.
I came over the finish line pretty refreshed, which was personal disappointment as I clearly didn't push it.
My goal for 2010 is to make up 7 places and be 20th or better...is that feasible, and what would you say I should do.
Other than maybe riding more than 3hours at a time in preparation?

 |
I'll be doing up to 10 hour rides, time trialling, duathlon/triathlon, up to 2 hour runs, maybe the odd marathon and press ups. That's the plan anyway.
|
 |
I'd toyed with the idea of doing a marathon...right up till the other week when after about 5km I was at the point of puking my lungs up...running and cycling are very very different things.

I'm also thinking of getting myself induced into a coma for 3months so I can quit these fucking cigarrettes

My aim will be to not finish last

My only battle is with myself.
