They make more sense the less suspension you have/want.

I seem to remember reading something sensible about 29ers somewhere. Now where was it? Oh yes, BM. Can I have a tube of Smarties now please Mr Editor Sir?

You were dribbling over that one yesterday as your eyes were bleeding at mine. 29ers are great skills compensators and I should know, even though I push it's limit a bit too much at the weekend. You don't need to be tall to ride them any more ands I should know. 5'8" with 2 x 29ers and another on order. http://www.ninerbikes.com/fly.aspx?layout=bikes&technology=true&taxid=103

About the same height as me and I worry about buying an 18" rather than a 16" as it feels bigger and harder to pick wheels up.
My AIR9 is a medium frame BTW
 I meant I worry about a size 18" i.e. medium 26" being too cumbersome let alone a 29" bike.
Do you find your find your road bike cumbersome then?
I certainly can't manual it. And yes, it is clumsy and unwieldy compared with my MTBs but obviously that has more to do with where the bars are.
Have you actually ridden a 29er yet John? I haven't ridden one in anger yet (just a pootle around the car park) but more of my riding buddies have got one and over certain terrain they are noticably quicker than previously. I am keeping an open mind on them anyway.

I would love a hard tail and if I get the funds I may try to source a 29er. It will depend upon being able to get tubes/tyres/general spares etc. However, I hate to say it but I think my next bike maybe (whispers) a roadie - there is a massive scene out here and a few of my new mates are very keen.

Since we're all friends...I was contemplating sticking a 29" on the front of my new On One...the way I figured it the added rake and stuff would be comparable to putting a 150mm fork on

BTW , just been PM'd by the boy Turvey - seems in good form!

Did he threaten to kill you?

Nope haven't ridden a recent 29er. I ride BMX, 24" and 26" though so know exactly how characteristics change with wheel size and wheelbase. Dylan went from a 150mm fork to a 100mm fork and 29" wheel and it worked for him Billy. As he tends to roll over things rather than skip over them it suits his style but I doubt it would suit mine.
I've seen dylan ride...I was surprised he could maintain momentum to roll over anything at his pace!

i've had 3 29ers. imo for XC they are perfect. wouldn't use one (and don't) in all situations - devils starcase last weekend, case in point - but for more regular rides they are fab. mine have been rigid, and now with 80mm travel. they roll really nicely, keep their momentum, i've not had handling issues, they are quick over flat and rolling terrain, and if i can come in the top 3rd of a race with 150odd people on a rigid SS they can't be that bad... have successfully cleared laggan black on mine - not exactly a race bike friendly route... and was out in the alps this summer with a guy on a rigid 29er who was riding very nicely... definitley worth riding one yourself so you can form your own oppinions of them dunno how to embed pics, but here is me coming into a lovely 2 wheeled drift on my old on-one

Do you find your find your road bike cumbersome then? You realise that 700c road wheels and thin tyres are about the same outside diameter as 26in MTB wheels and chunky tyres, yes?
Yes I did actually . I was just making the point that one shouldn't have a hardened opinion in it without trying it first.
