Who is celebrateing tonight and wasteing money on setting fire to toilet roll tubes filled with gunpowder. Whats the point.

Waste of money? Not IMO, we go along to the local event, support the local community, bump into people that we maybe haven't seen for a while, beats going to the pub to 'waste' money.
|
 |
And how many casualties or even deaths are there going to be tonight?? All in the name of entertainment?
|
 |
I reckon 5 deaths and 2345 injuries.

It's one of the few British institutions I miss. It was ace when I was a kid and bangers would blow things to bits then as a student the parties were great. A fire engine and police car turned up to one of our parties at the remote farmhouse in Wales I rented for a pitance. They had been called out to nationalists burning a cottage! The police walked into a dope smoke filled room with a diabetic biker desperately injecting insulin as he'd been drinking and shouldn't have. I was about the only one there capable of coherent sentences and spent some time convincing them they weren't needed.

.jpg) So it was party time in Wales! I once went to a party were someone put acetelene into a cement-mixer, now that was a big bang. Needless to say the police turned up, as they thought it was set off by the same nationalists. We offered them some red hot curry that we had on the go But they declined

Don't have them here, can't say I miss them, although I did enjoy 5th november when I lived nr Ruthin, North wales. There was a local village bonfire and display, always good, especially as it was at the pub.........tonight was just an Italian lesson, and then there will be various bouts of feeding tonight/tomorrow morning.

Rather pitiful display by our local council useing our council tax to fund it,and no bonfire. LLysfasi.

Llysfasi what? but yeah I used to teach at Llys.....

3,000 students on the beach. Amazing.

I used to love it as a kid, all the local community gathering around a big bonfire, all the mothers made food, it was a big party. But over the past few years it seems to have drifted more to individual families having a small fire in the back garden and letting of a few fireworks by themselves, and the ant social element of society using it as an excuse to wreak havoc. Probably very much reflecting society, although I do wonder if I just see things differently now as an adult, and if its just the same as it always was. I did notice that Halloween was discussed and on television quite a lot, but barely a mention of bonfire night. Almost as if the establishment is trying to phase it out, unhappy at a celebration of a plot to blow up the government. Not that I believe in conspiracy theories mind you

The look on Jr's face is the point - just a few rockets & some sparklers & he was really excited.
That and blowing up stuff is always fun

I'm intrigued by some attitudes towards these things. Jr goes to a C of E school & Hallowe'en is never even mentioned. Yesterday they had a 'bonfire night lunch' & were taught the Fireworks Code & all about being safe. Strangely, there was absolutely no mention of what November 5th denotes let alone why it is celebrated with fireworks....

I love it, but it's one of my hobbies. Waste of money?- Each to there own, another forum I frequent has recently had a small by there stanfards firework bash, I'd hate to think how much pyro was used, but it was all a bit of fun. Whats the point?- enjoyment, raising money for charity, I can also supplement my wages by crewing on some pro events. I'm off to the Las Fallas festival in March over in Valencia, they know how to let off fireworks.

I noticed in the news yesterday that Ilfracombe Rugby Club were so inundated with H & S requirements from their local council that they had the a televised big screen showing a bonfire, with a smoke machine behind and loud speakers playing the sound of crackling wood! This is what we have come to!

apparantly she said Guy Fawkes was sent to jail , and my eldest (7) explained that he was hung drawn and quartered, which is not really the same.

That came up last year & is just a bullshit excuse - lets' blame it on the HSE. The guidance on it is very straightforward and is publically available to anyone who can be arsed to look for it.
We looked into arranging one for the School but it was the costs/payback that made it unviable NOT the H&S implications. A Rugby club or similar should be okay because they'd sell a sehd load of booze to generate income that we couldn't.

You can sell booze at school events, just need a temporary events license. Almost all of out ptfa events are now non-dry, and adds a fair few quid to the funds.

That came up last year & is just a bullshit excuse Yeah well how many qualified Fire Marshals do you know? They needed five apparantly!
|
 |
Interesting the there expecting 2500 people when a £21 tempoary events notice only covers up to 500 people including staff. A quick google search shows that specific fire marshall training is £82 per person so £410 for the 5 people needed, then they would already be in place for next year as well, i'd have rather done that then forked out £300 for a telly on some scaffolding.
