id agree its either avids or hope discs....

He cant go disks, so avid v's with avid levers. You can go ad3/sd3 levers/brakes for around 35 quid as well. anything at 35 is stupid. you should really be looking at 50 quid as a minimum, as otherwise you end up with a pile of crap.
i still support avid speed dial / single digit 5
i use avid sd-20 v's with speed dial 1.9 levers i think the new version of my stuff is called speed dial 5 or summat theyre the best v's for the price i reckon avid arch rivals are good too but wont fit 2.3 tyres
but hey i'll be probably getting deore discs soon so wahey!

Er, no. None of the brakes avid make are by any means a pile of crap. But I would agree about getting 5s rather 3s for the levers for the on-the-fly modulation adjustment.
I mean vs and levers, not just the brakes. And y would i say avid is a pile of crap? i love em!
Deore disks? go for avid... much better... or xt(r) disks
Joe... yer, i think that the new version or urs are the 5's
i mean deore hydros theyre awesome for the price (£80)
but who knows, i might get the e4s
buy Avid Ar50 and avid levers
Buy Avid mechanical disk with Speed Dial Ti if i had my way.

You may be aiming higher, but out of interest Merlin have Deore v brakes for £20 and the levers for £10, or possibly the other way round. www.merlincycles.co.uk

Jon - ta for the tip! Merlin seem to be selling Deore v-brake sets for £26.95. D'you happen to know if this is the full front/back set? If so, that's down from the £40 I've seen it elsewhere, which would mean that it's time to upgrade my wife's commute bike... ;)
No idea I'm afraid, though I'm eyeing the cheap V's on my current (soon to be commute) bike and thinking the same
Chain reaction sell Deore levers for a tenner, and cantis for a tenner each, normal price, not special offer.
Just got an email back from Merlin - the price is for both front/back brakes and levers. No cables included but they're only an extra £5 if you need 'em.
Now I'm really tempted. ;)

Sorry to reserect this thread again. Just noticed that Merlin are also selling STX RC cantis with M600 levers for £25. These levers are great as far as I remember (3 pos modulation) does anyone have experience of the STX cantis?

I recently swapped Tektro Vs for Deores and the difference is very noticeable. Deore's much stiffer and don't squeal. For such a low cost brake they are very good.
