Anyone got any thoughts on how long Magura rim brakes are for this world, or how long one might be able to get hold of pads for them? I'm toying with the idea for my road tandem and a sensibly priced upgrade (Disks would require, er, a new frame/forks and 2 new wheels, so is not cost effective!). It has Cantilevers right now, adn moving it to straight bars allows me to do V-s reliably, but a pair of HS33s will cost me 120 quid.
As a supplementary question - can you still get the Magura levers for drop bars?
From what I can see pad availability is the only issue. Chainreaction actually have the HS11s for 59.95. These seem to be the same spec as the HS66 stirrup, so might be worth getting, since thats the same price as a set of LX Vs - the only concerns is the lack of booster - the chainstays on my tandem are pretty slim...
yet another supplementary question - what sort of distance is required between the rim surface and the brake bosses? I got bitten before with this frame, being unable to fit some Campag cantilevers that needed more room than I had to give on a road tandem frame...
they are gonna be around for ever, as far as i can tell a set could last for at least 5 years without a service, the pads shouldn't be a problem, they seem to last for ever compared to v pads. so if you get a few pairs they should keep you going for some time.
They are an excellent brake, I had an original set back in 92, still going strong. The current ones are much better. Chain Reaction are doing them for £95 at the moment. These are obviously for a solo bike though, so not sure about a longer hose for a tandem.
