How many jackets do I need? I am considering buying a)A windproof b) A waterproof.Would I survivive wet 2 hour rides with a windproof or would I need a waterproof as well?I am considering these a)Windproof - Gill Moab (looks good from BM review, except is it cycling specific?/Endura Jaffa, b) Waterproof -(if required) from Gill Exodus 01,Endura Montana, all from Wiggle.Anyone use any of these?

no. check out Ground Effect reviews in reviews sect. most windproofs are only good for an hour in light rain. most companies go for too much bulk once you want rainproof, Karrimoor are one exception but its all top dollar, look at the Ground Effect stuff i've not seen a bad review yet.

I have three (3!!!!) Gill Jackets Ian and can tell you the following of two: i: Exodus. Ensure it is the the one with the detachable hood as the roll up hood version gets in the way of the helmet and also it is quite long and therefore causes a few mount and dismount problems. I have designated mine as a general purpose / hiking coat and it is very breathable. ii: Repack. A great loose fitting windproof that is very light has a good amount of reflective piping and longish arms which are a good point to have as they don't rise up your wrists when riding. The smallest amount of water will go straight through it though. Even puddle spashes on tarmac.
(Should have put these in the review section).

The third that I have is the Fireroad but it only arrived today. Not having a waterproof to ride in was my excuse for not doing the Flintshire this weekend. Now it will have to be "haven't got the right mud tyres, chaps".

I have a cheap trespass power push jacket.I paid about 20 quid for it and it's not really breathable but I love it.I've usedit on contless waterfall from the sky rides and it's great and I dont find I sweat unless I have like two fleeces on adn then I'd sweat anyway. ads are that it's bright/cheap and very very waterproof

Ian,

Go for Waterproof - a 2 hour ride will leave a windproof deeply uncomfortable and you most likely soaked.

Befoer you buy I'f widen the search, Whilst Gill and Endura make good jackets there are many more makes out their,
Gore Karrimor, RaceFace, GroundEffect, Parrot, etc....
try to read as many reviews as possible and try garments on in a shop before you buy where possible.

Good waterproofs will be sweaty....so opt for as much ventilation as you can.

The also thing you wnat is to discover the flaws in a garment cycling around Mam Tor in a sleetstorm. :)

Hope you get a good deal :)

Trouble is it's virtually impossible to find a waterproof that's really breathable.
My Ground Effect Dr Smock is completely windproof & very breathable & will keep me dry in light rain. Anything heavy for more than about 10 minutes though & it starts to seep in. BUT because I'm sweating anyway & because it's windproof, it's not cold or uncomfortable.
Hope that makes sense!
For really shite, cold & wet weather though I'll stick to my Buffalo.

Actually 10 minutes is a bit unfair - 30 mins is more like it in heavyish rain. I'd recommend it.

Freestyle Goretex Extreme - wads of dosh!

But 5 years on and countless runs through the washing machine it still does the job.

The trick is to have big ventilation and a close fit (and not a smock).

Pit zips that open wide (unlike Endura), rear zip ventilation pocket, wide cuffs which can be closed, drawstring waist thats long at the back.

Oh how I love that Jacket. If it gets too sweaty your wearing too much.

I have recently acquired a Goretex Paclite waterproof but have yet to test it in rain - it's too warm to wear on "merely cool and windy" days.
I have ridden in all weathers in a windproof for the last 12 years and have never really had a problem - even in epic Noah's Ark weather in the Beacons - sure you get a bit wet after a while but if you put the right layers underneath it doesn't matter. The windproofs in question are/have been a Buffalo Windshirt (great venting, very breathable and quite waterproof); a Race Face AquaSomething (it's only windproof) - quite warm, not as breathable or as waterproof as the Buffalo, but looks nicer and has reflective stripes; and a Patagonia windproof (as good as the Buffalo, and jacket-styled).
I think if you pick a close-woven windproof and layer sensibly, you can get away with almost anything.

I've had a Karrimor 02 jacket for a year now. Very waterproof and windproof, but a bit warm (just wear less underneath it!). With hindsight I'd probably opt for one of the Raceface ones (Aquanot for pure waterproofing, Aqualite for lighter and smaller pack size, but probably not as water proof). The armouring on the sleeves being the great advantage. (the 02 has been back to karrimor for repairs a couple of times....)

Many thanks everyone!

good and cheap. i've got the one with the full zip and it does the trick. not waterproof, but enough so as you won't really notice, especially as you'll be sweaty. the windproof element works and keeps you warm, so a bit of water won't matter.
