Has anyone used these chains? If so are they worth the extra money. I'm more worried about strength and compatibility with my drivetrain than price. And before anyone says try Sachs, I only have the choice of Shimano or Rohloff that are supported where I live.

All I have heard is that they are like jewels. Top of the range xtr's of the chain world or chris kings of chain gangs etc..

everyone who uses them raves about them, they get good reviews everywhere.the price is the big sticking point-£30 for a chain is too much for me, but I'm waiting as we speak for mine to drop through the door from Hi-bike ( www.hi-bike.de )£16 is a bit easier to swallow.

and they are meant to work very well with all set-ups.

rohlof chains are the chris king of chains,
other chains only fail in comparison, i had one chain a few years back that lasted for ever, i can seriously recomend them if you want one that lasts then go for it.

anywhere in the UK you can get them easily? i need a new chain? Otherwise, what 9 speed sachs would be sensible on LX cassette and chainset? I want it to be strong and hard wearing rather than light.

never broke mine.Just put one on a slightly worn cassette as new sachs chain kept slipping and has been sweet.Worth the extra money.

OK Rohloff - filed for future use. But there are no reviews (or mentions) of SRAM chains. Anyone got one? Sopposed to be easy to link up.

I'm on my second SRAM chain. First one was PC99, last night I just fitted a PC69(i think) much cheaper

I've had no problems with the SRAM chains at all. I'm running a LX chainset with XT Mechs, all 9 speed. I find its very smooth shifting.

what model chain did you get from Hi Bike?

I have used Sachs (SRAM) chains for a few months now. Much better than shimano ones if only for the power link connector.

I have bent/twisted a couple but this is more an indication of the horific chain suck I suffer on my Marin hardtail rather than weak chains.

I go for the PC69 as a compromise between quality and cost. Chainreaction sell them for about £14.99 each or a pack of 3 for £39.99.

Powerlink is good, means you can clean crap off whenever you like and still have faith in it. Run Lx 9sp cranks, xtr front mech Sram 9.0sl rear mech and casette. PC69 chain I think.

Had a campag 10sp originally which was really smooth but went with a bang after 4 months.

Now got sram 9sp road chain on wifes full LX after she broke the Shimano original. (cutouts in side plates look nice) It hasn't broken yet.

Has anyone tried getting spare shimano link pins? Do they only come with the chain as supplied?

Just remembered that I saw stainless steel chains in Johns Bikes, Bath the other day. Anyone used these? Sounds like a good bet for low winter maintenance on infrequently used bikes.

Expensive though at £40!

Rich, I get SLT 99's which is a standard 9 speed chain.I've nothing but praise for them and cannot envisage changing to anything else in the future.How come this thread has been dragged up now?If you need a 9 speed I have 2 spare and only really need one so if you don't want the hassle of ordering from Germany I'd let one go drop me a mail if you are interested.

To stop any confusion from my last post SLT 99's are not just 9 speed MTB chains,they have variants that are 8 speed and road chains,when ordering 8 or 9 speed and road or MTB must be taken into account.
