On getting home from a very splashy ride last night, I thought I'd give my new Greaseguard headset a go.
I noticed that the O-rings that came with it (WTB Momentum) aren't visible on the outside of the headset. I assumed they'd sit over the grooves that the grease comes out of.
My LBS is giving me the "our mechanic has been working with bikes for 45 years blah blah blah" line which is annoying me somewhat. However, I strongly suspect that they've left the o-rings off because I can't see them on my bike, yet on the WTB site here they're clearly visible.
Just thought I'd check though, before I start to really argue...
yes they sit over the grooves (on the outside of the headset) that the grease would come out of, and in every case Ive seen theyre bright orange (hence me patronising you in an earlier thread about it!), ss in the pics on the WTB site.
They are VERY visible, so you'd know if they were there or not. Can you print out a copy of a pic, or find one in a mag (or even on a bike in their showroom, some Konas come with em).
Without the O ring youve got a zero sealed headset with gaping great holes (relatively speaking) to let crud in. I'd go back to the shop with pictures and kick their arse.
Your bike shop is taking the piss... Anyway, neither WTB headsets nor indeed mountain bikes (in the conventional sense, so don't anyone start going on about "when I were a lad" please) weren't around 45 years ago so their line is irrelevant!
If it has greaseports, there should be an o ring seal there. There is another version, but it has neither the o rings, or the greaseports. Just a bright orange stripe painted on to look like an o ring.
Jon, I assumed you DID have the greaseguard (youve written enough threads about it, jeez anyone would have thought you'd got a King ;-) but the more info you have to hit the tw@ts at the shop with the better. All grist to the mill and suchlike.
The O rings don't fit inside the headset so if they have squeezed them in there, they are probably trashed.
Get the bike shop to set it all up again with the seals on the outside in the right place! Or get all the bits (new seals...) from the lbs and take the bits to another shop (pref one you trust) and get them to show you how to set everything up.
