I need to buy some bibs or tights to keep my legs warm. I'm not sure what to go for - bibs or tights. From what I can make out tights should have a high waist to stop my back getting cold. How hot do these get and how cold should it be before they are worn. Does anyone have opinions on any of the following - De Marchi Contour fit bibs, Ground Effect Daddy Long Legs (tights) or Ground Effect Jungle Jims (tights) or Altura Winter cruiser (tights) and Ground Effect Double Happys shorts.Checked consumer reviews but nothing. Cheers.
I like leg warmers, personally, because they can be removed/added quickly as weather changes (as the weather in this country tends to do very frequently). I've got some lovely warm Gore windstopper ones which were £25.
By bibs sdo youmena half length jsut belwo the knees or bib tights?. If it;'s the latter get bib tights unless youhave a tiny willy cos then you wont be able to slap it over the top for a wizz. Look at probikekit.com. Its a roadie sight but the bib tights are great
If you're wearing them for short journey then it's a matter of personal preference. If you're wearing them on longer rides or all-dayers, remember the ease of getting out the old man to releive yourself when it's cold - Bibs make it a lot harder. I use Endura MT500 tights - never been cold and easy to take a break
Up here (Scotland) Endura bib-longs are the only thing to wear over the winter. They can get a bit sweaty around the back, but they're fantastic. Stay warm when they're soaking wet (i've worn them for cross-country skiing too & they were spot on).
I recently bought some Endura 3/4 bibs, and they come very high up my back which keeps me toasty, also as they are bibs they are nice and comfy round the waist. These are really warm, so the full length ones must be amazing...
I have decided to compromise this year and go for the pro vision 3/4 tight. I find I get too hot commuting in bibs and I don't really need the full length for commutin either. time, however, will tell.
Basically, i reckon 3/4 tights for short rides, bibs for long rides on cold days...or you could just stay indoors...
Bibs - you KNOW you're not going to get a cold spot, and they'll keep your lower back warmer. Does takea bit longer for a poo though, especially if you have bib shorts on at the same time!
Cold weather tights (without the bib and kidney warmer) are few and far between. I like my Gore Windstopper Bibs (about 65quid, I think), they rock, and aren't those pointless 3/4 you see around.
Why can't people just use tight shorts and leg warmers instead? What a load of money people waste these days...
Now it getting colder, and I would sooner spend money on a new group-set than on cloths, I carry on wearing the same bib shorts that I did in the summer. But! I coat my legs in DEEP HEAT, this does the trick. If you can see your breath when you step out in the morning just use the whole can!
Using Deep Heat in this way will also improve your 10 and 25 mile times as you will need to go that bit faster in the cold air in order to cool your legs down. Also the chicks dig a guy in cycling shorts, so wear the all year round. (But you will not notice if they try to flag you down for your phone number, as you will be ride around so fast, try and take the burning sensation from your legs!!)
One word of WARNING! When DEEP HEAT is employed in this way, be careful that the spray does not leech up you’re your shorts to your balls. No matter how fast you ride; it will still not take the burning away from this area!
