What Lights now my Cygolites are deaded

Having had a set of Cygolite Night Explorers for 2 years (with a bit of soldering & jiggery pokery to fix intermitant flickering) they finally gave up the ghost after a breif over the bar experience & resulting in them meeting a suitably hard rock.

I'd like to go a bit brighter, I've got to put therm on an FSR Enduro Pro so frame fitting restrictions apply & don't want to spend more than £100.

Assuming you got a bottle cage ( or bosses for you to fit one ) got for the Sigma Sport Mirage with the Mirage X spot. Exccelent lights.
about £50

alex says : don't! they dont have a decent battery run time. too heavy. 20w is yellow liht lasting about an hour, the 5w is just like a 6v torch bulb (yellow, not bright enough)
tim says : learn some basic electronics and make your own if you dont mind them looking a bit chunky (who can tell at night!)

If Alex is referring to the Mirage set then he couldn't be more wrong. About the only point that has any truth is on full 25W output the life is a little low - 1 hour if your lucky. However they are not heavy ( lighter than my smarts and probably not far off a pair of conventional AA lights ). the illumination is superb - even the 5W is good enough for off road riding on things like canals and with both on probably the only ones that are better are the 80w cateyes. No Yellow hint at all, just a white piercing light ( until the battery runs down ).
Calm down you two, this ain't a bun fight.
The word "subjective" comes to mind.

If you have a big budget I can recommend lumicycle lights www.lumicycle.co.uk. expensive but very powerful and the battery pack is the highest spec I have been able t locate. spec in terms of life and weight.

If anyone wants any help in building their own set ( very easy ) please let me know. Have done it myself.

sub 100 pound;

SMART 1911 switchable single 12/15/20W light, nicad bottle cage battery MR11 halogen bulb, 40 quid plus a fiver postage from Supercycles (no one else appears to carry this model, its not in the new SMART catalog, but a lower power version is)

or

Cateye RC230 twin unit, 10W spot+10W flood, multimount (lead acid?) battery, 50-60 pounds dependent on shop (edinburgh cycle coop and chain reaction plus many others).

Just bought the SMART for my g/f, as the Cateye looked a little clumsy. It has lights that you can point and I was worried the brackets would loosen up and they would turn of their own accord on bumpy terrain. Also takes up a lot of bar space as youve got 2 light units and a big switch.

Good reviews of the SMART on this site, no reviews of the RC230 (first bulb that came with my SMART was duff and blew, new one looks brighter).
