well if something can last so long unchanged get top marks in every h'set review then it has to be like john smiths bitter so smooth it sells it self on a ad selling it!

The King Bottom Bracket.

Where is it? Well here is the real honest answer.

We hear that question many times daily. We are excited about this project. So how about a little history. Back when Chris conceived his initial BB design, things were different. There was only the square tapered BB, no splined BBs or cranks had been released yet. Easy chainline adjustment was a big design goal. His initial work was successful, but the product still needed some work before it was ready for prime time. While we were working on the original BB design, splined BBs and cranks began appearing. The target changed. We began working on a splined BB design. This changed the guts of the BB substantially and rendered a fair amount of the original work unusable. So it was essentially back to the drawing board.

In 1999, while we were working on the BB, Truvativ approached us about a new, open standard for a BB/crank interface. We loved the idea. Truvativ quickly got support from other companies in the bike industry and together, Truvativ, Race Face and King began working on what would become the ISIS Drive standard. This standard was released in the summer of 2000. Our motivation was simple: before we can design the inside of the BB (bearings, shell, etc..) we need to know what the interface will be. Plus, an open, free standard for anyone to use? That is where it's at. It means that any shop, frame builder, BB manufacturer or consumer can download the drawings and see exactly what it should be. No licensing agreements, royalties or patents. No guess work at all. This is 180° from what the bike industry has been doing for years now with the square taper. Lots of guessing and nobody was ever really sure what standard we were using. It was a mess.

Plus, the ISIS Drive arrangement allows us to work with some technology that we have had on the back burner for a little while. From an engineering standpoint, ISIS Drive will allow us to make a much better Bottom Bracket for you.

Meanwhile, we were in the process of setting up in our new location in Shasta Lake, CA. Installing 2 new processes (Heat Treating and Anodizing) and getting them tuned up while we hired and trained a whole bunch of people. This didn't leave us much time to work on the BB. That period is over.

With all out of the way, we are back in the saddle again, prototyping BB systems using ISIS Drive. So when will it be ready? Hard to say, but rest assured that when it is available, it will carry at least a one year warranty and all the qualities that you would expect from a King Product. It will be worth the wait. cut and paste in its finest, I always use FSA headsets, i have a PIG and a Orbit XLII, sometimes I look at Kings and think mmmm maybe then i think £110 is too much

i've had the same ck h/set for 5 years.put it on for different bikes and only "serviced"it this year to see if anything got past the neoprene seal.previously i went through 2 fsa and 1 cane creek in a year.chris king is worth its weight in gold!and don't anyone do the "ride once in a blue moon thing"i ride it 52 weeks a year 8-10hrs a week!

I have had two chris king headsets for the past four year one has not been serviced
at all the other once, both are still smooth. The 1" one out lasted my bonty ti frame
and is now on Deb's orange. Other head sets I have had even with servicing lasted
only a few months. At that rate they are good value for money!

I don't think you can replace the bearings just the sealing system.

we rang chris king and asked what spares they do,they said they don't cos they don't go wrong!!!how cool is that!

very cool, and anyone who thinks a cheapo FSA can be mentioned in the same breath as a Chris King in deluding themselves. They are worth every penny.

My 4 year old FSA's extreme's are still going strong (I have 2). But I have to say that the cartridge that holds the bearings now comes apart inside the cups. The bearings are smooth still (well serviced) but my Chris King is far lovlier - shame it's not on a bike as I type.

Daft isn't it, I know someone with a cheap ritchey headset that's over 3 years old. It never gives him a bit of jip. I, on the other hand had 2 X tange and 1 X FSA IN ONE YEAR which prompted the Chris King purchase (£66 in Supergo, Santa Monica) 2 years ago. It's been on 2 frames (not simultainiously)and not a squeek.

Chris King rules! All the fools with Pig headsets- your king's broke cos you like jumping . Chris King is an XC company . God, some people are stupid. Burn the pig and have it on x-mas day!
if chris king is a xc company then why do they make 20mm through axle hubs (no one say for use with Marzocchi RAC becasue ive never seen a pair on the trails)

Er... Chris King aren't an XC company, they make parts for bikes. Road bikes, XC bikes, downhill bikes...
has anyone seen the chris king salt and pepper pots? they're made from hubs that don't meet the chris king standards, i wonder if they have a 10yr warranty on them
