Which gloves do you recommend in these sub-zero temps? I've seen some in Decathlon (I know but it's local) for £20 supposedly good for a few degrees below, but I don't wanna risk it.
I know what you mean about cold hands. I went out the other day when the weather looked deceptively OK. After 10 mins, it hurt when I changed gear or braked. I resorted to changing gear with the palm of my hand.
Go into your nearest Bewise and buy a pair of Thinsulate lined gloves for £6. This is my third winter with the same pair and I have never had cold hands despite riding every day.
Alex, try wearing my half finger ones. I actually wanted to die on top of Rivington Pike that day. I underestimated the exposure. I was so cold I nearly cried, hey I said nearly.
Trek Bearpaws are very good. Specially grippy bits on the palm, thinsulate layer, fleece lining and drawstring cuff. Mine are on their second winter, and the only wear is from when I had a tarmac tiff.
Thanks, I'll pop down to bewise tomorrow and have a look. I'll check out the others too. I don't mind giving something a go for a few quid (gone are the days I could afford top kit!), and it's not like i'm a d/h'er or anything.
To help the process of elimination: don't go for Specialized MX Winter because they are not suitable for winter. They're alright down to about 4 or 5 degrees but much colder and you'll start to feel the chill.
I would certainly go the thinsulates under some full summer gloves. I use a pair of thinusulate (the ones that runners wear) and my normal gloves, and I haven't had cold hands so far, its been down to -15°C here, without the wind.
I got some Thinsulates from Bewise and they were only £2.99. They're not thin so couldn't be worn under other gloves, but they really kept my fingers warm in the freezing wind. Just tricky hanging onto the ali bar ends! Get some - best 3 quid i've spent this year.
I got a pair of Marks and Sparks Waterproof thinsulate Cyclone breathable glove from my lovely mother in law. They are the dog's bits. warm and fleecy. And Free as well! Job's a good 'un.
its very difficult to get waterproof gloves without spending lots of money. even with goretex, they need to be fully taped to seal the holes left by the stitching. better to get some that stay warm when wet. like thinsulate or powerstretch. and wear thin layers. same goes for other clothes as well.
I've been using Pearl Izumi Amfibs for the past 3 years, as do most of the guys I ride with. It has to be really, really, really cold to upset them (I've worn them in -20C, though not on the bike).
I'm with Jon. I've also been using the Pearl Izumi Amfibs for about 3 years. I was out in the North Downs a couple of times over Christmas & New Year when it was -2 C in the car park at the start, didn't even think about my hands all ride. They're good in the wet as well. I'm not sure how waterproof they claim to be, but I've worn in them in downpours and although they get a bit soggy they don't seem to let in the wet. They're not cheap, I guess they retail at around the £25-30 mark, but apart from a few outer seams needing a bit of restitching, they've lasted well. I will be buying another pair when these finally wear out. I also use them for ski-ing, again with no problems.
