the fat 66's cost twice as much as the steel 2.1" dh. i'm looking to get the 2.32 tyres because my new compo frame makes them stick to the road whereas my saracen x-ess had no grip. what differences are there between the standard tyres and the fat 66? is it just the sidewall strength giving better stability or is there any change in the tread pattern/compound?
the Fat 66 are loads better than the standard Tioga DH tyre.....they are lighter, with the increased strength in the sidewalls they resist blowing off the rim and they are alot more puncture resistant than the standard Tioga's, but apart from that the tread pattern and rubber compound are all the same, but the extra cash spent will save alot of hassle in the long-run.
the only problem with the Tiogas is that they are average at everything, but dont excel in any one area, have you thought about the Specialized Evil Twin SC, they are really good tyres and at a good price.
maybe you don't know just what a compo does for traction? i'll buy cheapy cheap for now. other things are more important to buy first! just wanted som more "suspension" through my back that the 2.3" tyres can give me.
i've been riding round on icy roads and i've only slipped once and that was on hard brking on a big, thick stop line at a junction. with them fitted to my x-ess i had to slow down to a crawl to corner in the wet. not so now!
if i was going to go expensive i was thinking mxxis high roller or irc kujo/el gato (someone mentioned you have to run that combination)
ive just sold my 2001 DMR Trailstar, and my Tioga fat66 2.1 dh would rub the inside of the chain-stays when cornering hard and thats even with them pumped up to 50psi, i think the Trailstar is built faviouring 24" wheels rather than 26"
isn't it APS meaning you can fit either without screwing up the geometry? and since the trend is to fit big muffa tyres to 24" wheels to give them the same diameter as 26" wheels, the tyre clearance on the trailstar sounds a bit naff! get aframe that gives you more cleaance than a marzocchi m arch!! get a compo!
