The freehub in my friend's Deore Hub has finally failed. That one lasted a good 7 months.
Servicing Shimano Hubs is a pleasure as far as I'm concerned. This is mostly because I've serviced far crappier hubs which never run smoothly like the Shimanos. No shimano hub I've ever used has needed any significant servicing (Bar replacing the occasional freehub body), and that's down to the trials use.
The seal friction in Shimano hubs is pretty low as far as I can tell, though it is higher in the Deore hubs than in XT or XTR - The XTR hub uses a plastic cover instead of a rubber one though. It's always working itself off due to axle flex from big landings though.
I can't fault the sealing on any Shimano hub though. I've opened hubs that have been given years of hard use in muddy conditions, and the grease in them is still clean.
Nobody's answered my question about the freewheels in Hope hubs. Has anyone broken one?

The seal "friction" in Shimano hubs does not make any noticeable difference to the efficiency of your bike. If you think it does, then you should also remove your fork boots, headset seals and bottom bracket seals!

 RE: XT disc rotor loosening
I found that using threadlock on all 6 bolts made that particular problem go clean away...
Your local car shop will have it, loctite blue is what everyone I know uses.

Cormac, along with just about every other part of a bike, I've broken a hope Ti freehub. Basically the pawl mounts started to crack, after four years use, so I sent it back to Hope. Two days later, they'd sent me a new Ti Freehub, and some new pawls and springs.
I think the pawl engagement bit, (sorry, don't know what it's really called), is just a press fit serrated steel band, so in theory it should be replaceable. If it was part of the aluminium body, it wouldn't last a week.
I've no idea if they're covered for trials use or not.
If you ask me, it's a far better system than shimano's, because it can be easily serviced, and if something breaks, it can be replaced, without having to replace the entire freehub.

The Hopes sound excellent. I'll wait to see how much more the Deore deteriorates over the next few weeks and make a decision then.
The XT Disk bolts already come with loctite on them, as well as having a plate that fits under them which you bend against the flats on the bolt heads. The reason the disk comes loose is because I use the back brake to stop both forwards and backwards movement.
One problem with Hope hubs I've seen though is that they don't seem to tap the disk bolt holes in far enough for the Shimano Disk bolts. A friend of mine has just built a Trailstar with Shivers and a BULB hub, and we had to put spacers under the disk to allow the bolts to be tightened up (They were about 0.5mm too long for the hub). Incidentally, the Shiver Disk mounts are about 5mm farther from the disk than a standard disk mount, so spacers are needed anyway.
I heard a similar story from another guy I know who got a pair of wheels built on Hope hubs, though I didn't actually see this first hand.
There's plenty of room to tap the bolt holes another few mm, so if anyone from Hope is reading this, that could do with being sorted out.
How good Hope's tech support is in Ireland is the next question though.

Hang on a minute, I run an XT disc on a XT disc front hub, am I at risk of it falling off?

Not unless you do a lot of G turns (Rolling backwards on the front wheel). My front disk has stayed put without any problems at all, much like the back one would if I was cycling it normally.

"That make you sour inside"
One of my quirks, my... ...unique sense of humour!
Totally unexpected and irrational bouts of insanity are, to me, hilarious. Mr Bean is a great example.
Daniel, can you change your name back, it's hard to hate you so much if you use Mister Grumpy. And we love hating.

Haven't you got homework to be doing??
