bar ends, stubbys or none at all. cant make my mind up whether to get them or not, are stubbys any good for those steep climbs. thanks in advance for any advice.
That old chestnut. I like bar ends, they give your hands a few extra grip options and allow a more stretched out position on hill climbs and long flat sections. Stubby's are all that's needed for most things. On risers above 1.5" they look odd but below that stubby's are ok. Stubby's can become blunt weapons in a stack and can sometimes catch on things if you like your singletrack fast and tight (and lets face it who doesn't! GRRRR).
STubbie bar ends work great, they allow a more aero position for the fast flats and extra hand positions for climbing, I have some Bontrager Race Lite on my Xlite risers and they work well for me :)
I have 2 MTB's. One for proper off road which doesn't have any bar ends and a commuter which does. I only ever tend to use the bar ends when riding out of the saddle ie on road climbs. If I need to get aero I move my hands together into the centre of the bars. (I feel like a sail riding on bar ends on the flat) You guesed it, I'm an old roadie !
i don't like bar ends and consequently don't use them, but i would consider myself reasonable proficient at steep climbs, so the moral of this story is basically...whatever floats your boat
I think stubbie bar ends are good for the hand position thing and also provide some hand protection when you're sliding down a rocky slope on your side...they're also pretty good for hanging Vicky Wine bags on when you pop down to the shops for a carry out...
