Ok, another thread I know but didn't want to ask too many questions in one place. I got a new bike before the Summer so my old Marin has now become my hack bike at Uni. I have noticed the rims are getting a little thin and the wheels have been trued so many times so I want to replace them. I've seen a pair of Deore hubs on X517 rims for £75. I've just had a birthday so am quite flush and the weight saving would transform the bike but are there any suitable 'commuter' rims I don't know about that are still fairly tough as a mate might borrow it from time to time to ride XC or should I stick with the 517s? Before anyone says, I know 517s are proper MTB rims and not touring rims etc. Also should I pay more for the CD coating or even 618s as I doubt they'll get trashed just worn through probably.
Lots of questions I know so thanks for your patience.
I've just gone for the combination that you did, except with disc hubs. Mine will be used mainly for commuting too (but also needed to be compatable with my disc equipped xc bike).
Originally 517s had such thin sidewalls that they used to wear out in a matter of weeks. Perhaps the dies Mavic use to form the rims have worn sufficiently to allow a bit more durability. I'd use a cheaper Mavic rim though. The weight difference of their crosscountry rims in comparison of the variable weight of tyres is bugger all.
also, don't advertise in the forum, it just pisses people off, because if everybody did it, the forum would be flooded with "wheels for sale" "frame for sale" "anal virginity for sale" etc..
so yeah, there's a code of conduct that i reccomend you read
