Need a lock for my bike, must be able to secure 2-3 bikes. Most of the ones i have looked at seem to heavy/big to have in my Hydro or on the bike over a long period of time.
i remember reading something about locks in MBUK. Some one asked about the statement they made about thieves being able to get through most of the locks around today using things like portable mini drills and cutting disks. I dont know if this is th ecase but they did say the toughest lock they recomended was a Kryptonite New York. Ive never seen oen but u may want to check it out. But they said it was damm though so it will most likley be pretty hefty. Just a suggestion.
Abus Steeloflex 1000/100 about £50 and very very tough, I had one last year they tried to cut it / hack it, etc. damaged the plastic cover but the lock was 100% ok
unlike the New York lock (very good for rough neighborhoods), the Steeloflex weighs only 3kgs and can be carried around your waist quite comfortably
New York is a great lock, but I 'lost' my bike when they cut through the metal post it was attached too. The problem for you though is that its got a very short D bit.
I did like the squires and if I remeber right they come in long lengths.
This site lists locks which have been attack tested by the master locksmiths association approved with most insurance co's specifying a gold lock to be used (read your policy)Gold= 5mins resistance silver = 3mins and bronze= 1min I have a squire parramount plus (gold) cost me £30 in Halfords (they cocked up the price) Compare what you want in terms of length and security and dont buy a great security cable and lock it with a £5 padlock also look on www.squirelocks.co.uk http://www.abus.de/ www.kryptonitelock.com www.bikesecure.co.uk
i have an Abus granite and it is relatively light, but all the tests i've seen of it seemed to think it is relatively secure. The D is reasonably long, but not huge. Trouble is, the longer the d bit is, the easier they are to get into, and the heavier they are.
I know you said weight was a problem but if you got three bikes to secure, firstly the lock needs to be quite big and secondly you could be locking up quite a lot of money's worth so should be tough. Kryptonite make a New York chain which is heavy but damn tough (Gold rating).
Do you have insurance and need a particular lock? How much are the bikes worth? How much are you willing to spend? Bit more info may help.
Personally I have the New York D-Lock and although its pretty heavy, its perfect for one bike. Big enough but not huge that it can be levered or tools got into and it just feels solid which is quite re-assuring.
