How are gear ratios calculated, what do they mean, why do we care???

your gear ratio is the number of teath on your front chain ring divided by the nuber fo teath on the back crank that you are using.

It is the number of times the back wheel turnes compared to the nuber of times you turn the cranks (your cadence). Each person likes a different cadence, it is normaly between 60 and 80 rpm.

Is that any clearer?

so running a 32 up front and a 14 rear results in a gear ratio of 2.286 ??

Simple as that?

yep, simple as that.

It means for one pedal revolution your rear wheel goes round 2.286 times.

Oh..... I thought is was going to be something deeper than that....ho hum
