I was a bit surprised when I came to put the bike on the rack that it wouldn't fit - and now I have a dilemma on my hands - spend next weekend looking for a new rack, or just chuck the bike in the boot and get the car filthy !!!???
I have a pendle one which goes on the toe-bar. Really good and it fits all bikes because the only bits that attach are the wheels but the frame is secure because of a pole thingy . . .
Gav could your budget stretch to a small-ish Trailer something like the caddy range avaible form halfords and towsure (www.towsure.co.uk)(presumeing you have a tow-bar) and it will also come in handy for trips to the tip with the usual grass clippings ect keeping your car clean too
I remember seeing somewhere that you can buy a bar that connects between the seatpost and handlebars to creat a 'false top tube', thus allowing you to put the bike on an ordinary boot rack (where the bikes rest on their top tubes). don't ask me where I saw this, but I know I definately did see it!
I have an FSR and managed to fit it on a Paddy by removing the wheels and mounting it upside down. Right pain. It's a lot easier on the Thule roof bar but when we go to Coedy I like to make the most of those Welsh roads, I have nightmares about the bugger flying off, usually end up putting both bikes in the boot (a saloon). Saves money on petrol (areodynamics) and no need to fork out on expensive carriers.
What car is it for, some manufacturers make their own bike racks (espec french car manufacturers) that will not only suit the bike more, but the car also. My missus has a citroen picasso that I use at times, and does our annual french hoilday, and the citroen rack is superb, holds 2 complete bikes on the tailgate, the rack clamps on, no straps, and still allows the hatch to open. It is nigh on theft proof due to the clamp on mounting. They even do an interior bike rack which replaces one of the rear seats, and hold the bike by the front dropouts. Might be worth seeing if the local car dealer does anything to suit.
